I would like some opinions regarding the 3 stones shown below.

What is the best deal? Is the price quoted a good price? Which one would you buy? They are of different sizes, clarity and color but all very well cut stones.

Hi SS,

First diamond from WF - do you have the crown and pavilion angles please, and any images such as ASET if it is an in house diamond? You will need to check carefully with WF that it is eyeclean to your standards.

Second diamond - looks promising from the proportions.

Third diamond - EGL USA is said to be the strongest of the EGL labs - a point to mention that the cut adjective Ideal Plus is no guarantee of a well cut diamond. The pavilion angle is a bit shallower than I prefer so ideally I would like an ASET image for this diamond, but as it is from a jewellery store this is probably not possible regrettably.

From the info we have, so far the second diamond looks the most promising to me.

On the HCA, this stone gets a 3.9. Just changing the crown angle from 35.5 to 35, HCA score is 2.4.
Change the crown angle to 34.5 and HCA is 1.9.

HCA significantly penalizes this stone for a 1.0 degree difference in Crown Angle.

Question #1 - How precise are these "35.5" measurements? Could the tolerance vary 0.5 degrees?

Question #2 - The HCA score significantly differs with the 1.0 degree change...Does this accurately reflect actual performance difference in a diamond 35.5 degrees vs 34.5 degrees? Will the 35.5 diamond be a dud and the 34.5 really sparkle that much more?

1. PRECISION vs ACCURACY. 35.5 is the average on the stone. SARIN is very accurate. (But the machine can only be as good as its calibration.) You don't need to be more precise than one-tenth of a degree. The range of ACCURACY for SARIN is
2. According to Garry, seems like people should be able to pick out a stone with HCA3, especially when dirty. One whole degree is quite a lot in terms of diamond cutting.

Phil, Idealscope or ASET will reveal any negatives with the WF diamond, so see if you can get one. I prefer the second.

The HCA is used for elimination rather than selection, however it is useful to tell you which type of category the diamond falls within.

Personally I think the 1.01 is a better balance being TIC and the subsequent proportions. The FIC, it is very difficult to advise without images but if you have seen it in person, like it and your lady would prefer a larger diamond, then that might be the frontrunner. I would recommend checking it out away from the jewellery store lighting if possible so you can give it a good test drive in the everyday lighting the ring will be worn in. With the FIC being EGL graded, I would also make the sale final on it checking out with an independant appraisal to your satisfaction in all areas, and get this in writing.

Pricing, you can check using the Pricescope your Diamond: tool above, the prices given are for online stock, typically brick and mortar stores are more expensive, but it will give you an idea.
