Hi all- i am looking for advice on the 2 stones, ive been shopping for weeks and want to get this done asap.
They are both round brilliant, H color, excellent cut. They are less than $200 apart. Ive seen a lot of people saying table should be 56 or lower, but should i worry about 1%?

1.19 ct
61% depth
57% table
34 crown
41 pavillion
6.85 x 6.86 x 4.2
HCA = 1.4

Any photos of the stones? From paper alone, I prefer the first one. 57 table is definitely fine. I personally do not like large tables and would not go above 58 for my own stones.

These are measurements to help you stay in ideal cut territory with a GIA excellent cut stone. The first one does fall in these parameters.

table: 54-58

depth: 60-62.3

crown angle: 34-35.0 (up to 35.5 crown angle can sometimes work with a 40.6 pav angle)

pavilion angle: 40.6-40.9 (sometimes 41.0 if the crown angle is close to 34)

TonydCT,

Hello - I cannot comment on the specific diamonds you have listed since I am in the trade, but here is some general information to consider. Diamonds that have a 60/60 proportion (table to depth) will have a noticeably different look than diamonds with the great proportions that diamondseeker2006 recommended (which are centered around the Tolk Ideal parameters). You will want to check these parameters on any diamond you are looking at to determine if it is cut with Tolkowsky parameters in mind or as a 60/60.

What is a 60/60 diamond you may ask?

Given everything else equal, as the table increases in size, the crown height decreases. 60/60 diamonds often have a Pavilion Angle larger than the Tolk and a Crown Angle smaller than the Tolk (which reduces crown height). This will create (in a well-cut 60/60) a very bright diamond, but usually with not as much fire as a Tolkowsky.

So it now becomes a matter of choices in cut. The best 60/60s are cut with long lower halves, making the pavilion mains narrow which, when accompanied by the shallower crown, results in small rapid flashes of scintillation compared to the Tolkowsky which will typically have larger/broad flashes.

So, this leads to the question of value - why are 60/60's often cheaper for the same weight as a Tolk?

The tolerances outlined above (narrow pavilion mains and shallow crowns) are often NOT designed for light performance but instead for weight retention. This could result in a diamond that is not well-cut and does NOT perform as you would hope.

To be clear - many people LOVE the look of a well-cut 60/60 and others prefer a Tolkowsky cut MRB, it is a matter of taste. But in every circumstance light performance images are critical when selecting ANY diamond you are considering as they will give you insight into the cut the numbers on the lab report simply cannot.

You should ask the vendor for the images. Most reputable vendors will provide them for you. Good luck, I hope you find a nice stone. :wavey:

Im not 100% comfortable buying a stone without seeing it, but the savings is decent. Plan is to have stone sent to jeweler in nyc, they are the ones that make the ring she likes. http://mdcdiamonds.com/engagementdetails.cfm?Stock=ES831BRWG&Country=US
