Hi, I am just looking for some advice.. I have read and researched before going shopping for the ring but I am still confused. I found a nice 2.01 carat diamond G color S1 with excellent polish and symmetery. It is round and EGL certified. The price is 14300. After looking at other dealers , including going to the jewlers buliding in Boston the price seems awfully good. Does this seem too good to be true?

Send it to GIA or AGS.
I'll bet it does not come back G SI1.

"Too good to be true" is how these off labs make their living off of people who don't know any better.
It is astonishing and sad, but true.

Now you know better.

Ok.. here is my next question. I looked at and I S1 that was GIA Certified and was priced at 14000. It just didnt seem to have as much sparkle as the other stone. Am I asking for too much with my limited budget of 14000?

Learn how to determine good cut.
When a diamond is well cut it returns more light to your eyes.

At the top of this screen click on KNOWLEDGE.
Then select Advanced Tutorial.
Read it all. (Skip the sections on the fancy cuts if you are sure you want a round)

Cut determines the beauty and light performance of a diamond a zillion times more than color or clarity.
Cut is the most important, but the least understood C.

Get these four numbers from a GIA or AGS lab report:
Depth %
Table %
Crown angle in degrees
Pavilion angle in degres

Plug them into this, the Holloway Cut Advisor.
Reject stones that score over 2.0.

Next get Idealscope pic and post it here or learn how to interpret them yourself.

thanks for your advice Kenny and I will read that. Just one last question. Do you think I can find a good diamond in that price range?

Yes absolutely, but not a 2-carat G SI1.
Not if it is a REAL G SI1 with good cut.

Here is a 1.7 H SI1 that is superbly cut for $14,500, with an HCA score of 1.2.

Check with vendor to determine if it is eye-clean.
Some SI1s are, some are not.
Also discuss your definition of eye-clean.

thank you very much for all your advice.. you are a tremendous help.. What color range and clarity would you recommend I look at with my budget? The setting will be platnium

Color is personal preference.
You should go to look at loose stones to find your comfort range.

But if you must have 2-ct well-cut stone, and your budget is $14,500 firm, I think you will be looking in the range of J SI1 or SI2s.
It is even harder to find an eye-clean SI2 than an SI1, but people do find them.

Put that superbly-cut 1.7 ct next to the typically-cut 2 carat and the 1.7 will look perhaps as large because it will be returning much more light.
Also the extra light return of a well cut diamond helps to hide body color when viewed face up, though granted we often look at our diamonds from the side.

Here is a 2 ct J SI1 for $15,300 that is superbly cut (but it is sold). Click
But it gives you an idea of what is possible.

Whatever you do, insist on top cut.
Let the other 3 Cs end up where they end up, but do not compromise on cut to keep the other Cs up.

Thanks for the advice everyone.. I never realized that shopping for a ring could be so exciting and stressful at the same time
