PSers, I've been lurking for a while and first off want to say thanks for helping me learn a ton about diamonds!

My bf and I went diamond shopping and committed to a stone before posting stats and asking for your opinions (I know, I know..). BUT! The store as a good return/exchange policy and price match guarantee, so all is not lost. We don't have any photos, just the GIA report below:

GIA Report:http://www.gia.edu/cs/Satellite?pag...&c=Page&cid=1355954554547&reportno=2161108599

Please provide any feedback or advice on the diamond we've committed to! It's really beautiful in person and has tons of fire and brightness. It will be mounted in a rose gold setting to echo the warmness of the diamond.

Our budget was ~$10,000, and the diamond above was $10,400.

Was this a fair price? A typical markup? Or a good deal? Thanks in advance! :)

Price is too high. You can get a J or K color with that budget, and I think in the long run you will be glad you did.

Just a couple of examples.

You could go to superideal cut K VS2 for just a little more:

Or, you can go with a GIA XXX J VS2 for less than you are paying for the L:

I really advise you to return that diamond and take a little more time to compare. Because you can get a higher color stone at a better price than you'd pay for that L. Here's a GIA XXX L VS2 for $6800.

Thanks, DiamondSeeker! I had been looking at those same diamonds as well. I couldn't find an exact same diamond to compare - GIA XXX, HCA <2, etc.. but it seemed that prices were generally lower for similar diamonds.

Do you recommend we try to price match and find a similar diamond? I'm not sure how many specifications have to line up. Or return the diamond, request to see more diamonds in our price range at a lower color level, keeping all things equal? Thanks, again!

Do you love this stone? If so, try negotiating the price. Looks like you overpaid by a fair bit, but if you really love it and want to keep it you may as well save a bit. You've seen it, we haven't. If you'd rather a larger/higher colour stone, then let this one go. Just have to decide what characteristics are most important to you.

If you love it and really want L color, then I'd get the price down at LEAST $2000. But for me, personally, I would return and either buy the ACA from WhiteFlash, or if that is out of budget, I would definitely buy the J from Enchanted Diamonds. I don't see you getting a good price where you are shopping now. It is easy to buy a well cut stone from an online vendor. Much easier than finding one locally, actually.

Thanks for your words of wisdom, telephone89 and diamond seeker. We will try to negotiate the price of the stone, and if that does not work then we will start the search again. And ask PS first! :)
