Hi all, new to the forums. I'm in the market for an engagement ring. I am looking for something in white gold, with an emerald cut diamond(s). My significant other has mentioned she likes vintage/estate rings but I am open to looking at all types. I've been doing a lot of searching and keep coming back to this ring. For those of you more educated in this field, is this a decent deal? Or should I keep on searching? Thanks a lot!

btw my price range is 2000-2500.

Hi there,

First of all, I think you have nice taste in jewelry. It's nice that you're putting a lot of thought into what you think she would like!

Regarding the specific one you linked to, it's hard to say if it's a good deal because you don't know exactly what you're getting. Having a GIA GG give an appraisal is nice, except it sounds like it's from the vendor (so not an objective or unbiased party). The fact that the weight is listed as "estimated" means it wasn't removed from the setting to be analyzed properly. Likewise with the color grade. (Color grading is down unmounted and face down under controlled conditions.)

There are a few other things that make me a little suspicious. The "finish" of the diamond is listed as good; I'm not sure what they mean by finish on it. If it's a vendor thing it could be made up. It might be like saying, "This tomato bisque is delicious, and the key is fair." Which should prompt a, "What?"

The site's description keeps saying the diamonds are "colorless/near colorless." Well, even if the color grading it accurate (which it may not be; see above) H-I is firmly in the lower end of near colorless.

Unless you and your future to-be love this particular ring, I wouldn't necessarily jump on it. A little education goes a long way. If it seems too good to be true, it is. :read:

Thanks for the helpful tips Sirguy. There's definitely a lot to learn when making a decision, glad there are forums like these with knowledgeable people.

RockyRacoon, thanks as well, I sent them an email asking if they can create a similar ring for the same price. We'll see what they say. Any other places that you would suggest looking that are reputable and in that price range?

Are you and your lady committed to emeralds? Rounds are plentiful and easier to shop for by the numbers, and can also be very pleasing to the eye.

this is beautiful. i know its not estate but i think its a good deal for what it is. If she said that just to open up your options on your budget, id consider this...

sense that stone is square like a princess, id ask them if they could do this setting without an addiction charge, as it says the setting price is for a princess cut (maybe millgrain it for that vintage look )
