I received a call from a friend who noticed a tiny chip on the edge of her diamond this weekend. She has called her insurance and they will replace the stone. She has had her engagement ring approximately 3 months and has an appointment will the jeweler this weekend. If the jeweler recommends trying to fix it should she ignore his advice and replace the stone? She has a RB and it is approximately 1 carat. She also has no interest in ever upgrading her diamond. What would you do?

Sometimes small chips can be repolished with virtually no change to the dimensions, shape, light performance and possibly even negligible weight loss. If she is very attached to the stone and such is the case, it makes sense to go that route.

However, there are repairs and hen there are REPAIRS. She needs to be clear on the nature of the chip and the projected outcome of the the repair in these areas. She should also inquire as to whether girdle thinness or other feature contributed to the chip, in which case this could be an ongoing risk with the diamond.

If there is not alot of sentimental attachment it might be reasonable to shop for a replacement diamond that gives her certainty.

I would have her send it to BGD.

Brian would be able to accomplish both options. He would be able to successfully assess the diamond and fix the damage or provide her with a replacement if it cannot be recut easily.

Thank you so much Texas Leaguer and Crystal for your responses. She received the engagement ring 3 months ago. Her thoughts were if there could be problems with the ring down the road she would prefer to get another diamond now. If will be interesting to hear what her jeweler recommends. She said the chip was very small but she could see it.
