Hey there everyone,
My fiance had a custom Sapphire engagement ring made for me late last year. The jeweller accidently set the sapphire centre stone in a white gold bezel setting instead of rose gold. Luckily, photos were sent to us first before it was posted so we could ask for it to be changed.
Fast forward a month and the ring is delivered. We have a quick look and check that it fits before putting it away (fiance wanted to wait for the right time to pop the question, also, positive feedback is left for th jeweller). My fiance popped the question in January. While out with my ring I notice what looks like a tiny chip next to the girdle on my ring (I decided that I'm just being paranoid and try to put it out of my mind). I decide to look at the ring again to check (looking in different light at the facets). There was definitely a chip there. I'm 100% positive that this was not caused by general wear as I only wear it for a few hours a day and have not knocked it on anything (I'm very paranoid about damaging my beauty).
I contacted the jeweller to let them know that there is a chip and asked what to do (I didn't say that I think they caused the damage). They sent a reply explaining how a knock can cause damage and that I could get it polished or re-cut by a specialist. Should I tell them that I beleive they have caused the damage when removing the stone from the wrong setting? There is also a tiny scratch either side of the chip, looks like a tool had caused the damage. When looking at the photos they sent me before it was posted (which were suspicously not as detailed as the photos of the ring in white gold) I think I can see the chip. I've attached a zoomed in photo of the chip with a red arrow pointong to the chip. I've also attached a photo from the jeweller which I think shows the chip (the rings upside down in the photo so the chip in on the left upper side)
What would you do? Tell the jeweller you believe it was their fault? Can you see the chip in the jewellers photo? I think it's where the arrow is although I'm not sure if it's at the bottom right side.I feel really awkward bringing this up.
