I recently stumbled upon a solitaire diamond ring with a 0.5ct, emerald diamond, nicely done. It has no certificate but comes from a reputable seller. I''d say that its color is about a G.

Here''s the tricky part. It has an inclusion easily visible to the naked eye if looked at closely. It looks like a large coloured dot.

The ring is going for about $500.

GOOD DEAL? Need your advise.

Thanks!

Hi mmrgr23! Welcome to PS!

I think that perception as to whether or not it is a "good" deal depends on whether or not this "visible" inclusion will bother you or whoever will be wearing the diamond.

$500 is still $500 ... If you even "think" it might bother you, I''m sure that there is a better deal out there waiting for you to find it.

$500 is pretty cheap for a 1/2 ct emerald.... pls research more on this... but then again, maybe it''s possible to get the diamond clarity enhanced?? Just a thought.
Does the diamond have a return policy? Maybe u can buy it, see it in person, then decide?

Welcome!

Have you seen this diamond in person? If it has a very visible inclusion such as you describe, it is likely it is an SI2 in this shape or even I1/i2 clarity, a higher clarity is preferred in this shapes precisely because they do show inclusions more readily.

It is up to you, it doesn't sound like a diamond I would want to wear personally, I would look around and see what else is out there. I wouldn't want to spend $500 on a diamond with such an inclusion, that would bug the heck out of me in an emerald cut - yuck-, but it is up to you if you feel it is a good way to spend your money. Out of interest, is this diamond with an online auction or an online vendor? Do you know for a fact if this vendor has a reliable return policy? But regardless, I would say pass for sure.

Thanks so much for all your concern. Yes. I in fact saw the ring being sold. It is being sold in a jewelry shop. I have been going around looking for a diamond ring I can afford..and this was the only one that really struck me (with my budget and all)...

I know if i buy it now, I would be happy. But the more I would look at it, and have it in my finger, I would start regretting my decision of buying it. My mom and other jewelry savvy sisters have been telling me not to buy it...but they didnt say anything about the ring being worth its price...anyway :)

Thanks so much for all the help! :)

That can be the thing, you buy the ring and the initial excitement keeps your attention off the visible inclusion for a time. Then the doubts creep in and the inclusion can really get annoying if it is that visible. I have 2 I1 clarity diamonds of goodly size, but I was able to find one which is totally eyeclean from the top, and one with a prongable white inclusion. A large dark spotty inclusion would drive me crazy.

I think you know what the right decision is. Have you considered buying online? Perhaps we could help you find some good diamonds to consider?

OH! This diamond''s inclusion is yellowish..and only visible when you look at it really closely. i first saw it with a 10x lens...and then i could see it without the lens...that''s why it''s bothering me too...that it MIGHT be worth the money.

yes, i have considered buying online. however, i do not know many places that would ship/deliver to the asia-pacific region...if you would know of some online sites, that would be a great help

A veteran PSer has a great saying that ' a deal is only a deal if you are getting exactly what you want.' Is this the case here? There are so many variables that we can't say if it is worth the money. Firstly it doesn't have a grading report, we know nothing of the clarity grade ( although I suspect it is low) or the colour. The cut quality is also unknown. If you like the diamond and feel it would be $500 well spent, then that is the main thing, but it seems as if your family are also telling you not to pull the trigger.

I would contact these vendors and ask them about shipping. They all have an excellent rep here.

Also, is it an emerald cut diamond in particular you want?

Would you know anything about a jewelery shop named B2Cjewels?

They have some rings that are more affordable...and I was wondering if you knew any feedback about that place...

Thanks!
