So I know there was a post somewhere within the past week or so about how fatty foods might be addictive.

I have to say, I totally believe this! I think it is so easy to become addicted to sugary and fatty foods. I find that when I don''t eat these foods for long periods of time, I have no desire to eat them. But the SECOND I drink a soda, or eat something bad for me, I constantly crave crap food for days....

So what are your thoughts and experiences with this? What helps you stay on track with eating healthy and maintaining healthy habits?

(would have posted in healthier lifestyle, but figured it would get more traffic here)

I definitely think there''s an addictive quality about fried or sugary foods. Basically anything involving carbs and grease. If I get a craving I get mentally fixated on it until I HAVE to have it. Right now it''s fried pickles. A friend mentioned them, I remembered how much I loved them and now it''s all I can think about. I even wrote a song about them (over in the preggo thread).

I find that I''m more addicted to a quantity of food than a type. If I eat large meals, I crave large meals and have a very hard time cutting back because I''m starving all the time. After a few days of starving I''m totally fine and can eat small healthy meals no problem, but allowing myself to eat large quantities is addicting for me.

I know what you are talking about and it is true. You lose the taste for those foods when you have not had them in a while. I usually eat 1 meal per week that is bad for me. Probably not the best idea, but I know myself and I can go for weeks without those foods, but then I will cave and eat McDonalds or something like 3 days in a row. Work is where my problem is. I can be eating well for about a month and then someone I work with will come in and have a bag with french fries and I "fall off the wagon". Eating once bad per week is enough to keep me from binging, but does not mean that I am a bad eater, to me at least.

I do think there''s an addicting quality to both sweet and salty.

My name is Erin and I''m addicted to nuts.

Almonds, walnuts, pistachios, pine nuts, cashews and honey roasted peanuts.

mmmm honey roasted peanuts. Another amazing nut is the smokehouse almond-only Blue Diamond brand for me please...

I really want to go to the mall down the street and get a pretzel.....

I don''t feel that I become addicted to fatty foods after I eat them.

The only thing that I''ll really crave after eating a bit are Jimmy John''s jalapeno potato chips. Just thinking about them now makes me want some!

There is definetly something very addictive about soda. I was drinking diet coke for a few years and then quit for a year. About three months back I bought a bottle and now have to have it every day or I freak out. In fact, it's only 8:55 am and I'm on my second glass of it!

Gotta stop. My dh and my inlaws are both warning me of how unhealthy the aspartame is!

The only alternative I've found is fizzy water like Piere (sp?). Works okay.

ETA - I also love nuts. Mostly just almonds. The deal is I'm kind of allergic to them so if I eat too many my tongue swells up. lol About a week ago, I ate close to a cup of them (a few here, a few there) and my tongue was so puffy, I sounded drunk. hahaha

I totally believe that certain types of foods are addicting. For me, it''s mainly carbs/sweets. I also crave salty foods once in a while. My favorite thing to have when I''m craving all three at once are chocolate covered pretzels.

Your stomach has to stretch to accomodate the large meal, and then it has to shrink back down to original size, which does take a few days. Seriously sucks.

Exactly! I find that much more problematic than specific types of food.

I''m coming round to thinking that certain foods aren''t part of a healthy balanced diet at all, even in moderation. I can''t eat one cheeseburger, I need to eat another one later in the day, and likely another few in the days that follow, for example.

I haven''t eaten them for a couple of years and now that I don''t eat them, I don''t crave them either.

I can think of a few other foods that go the same way and none of them are natural, for me.

I do believe that some fast food (made by particular food chains, rather than say a home made burger or pizza) has some additions to it that may be addictive, or at least make you want more, which isn''t quite the same thing.

uggh when I read certain books that describe food, I really want some of the food (even stuff I normally wouldn''t eat!).

Okay, now I''m craving the toddler-sized chocolate chip cookie that Strawdermangrl mentioned in the random comments thread.

SB -- enjoy those pretzels!

white chocolate chips. I eat them, put them away so I stop eating them, forget about them for a few weeks, find them again and can't stop eating them... and I don't have the self discipline to just not buy them to begin with! Vicious cycle, that.

It''s no coincidence that a McDonalds meal contains alot of fat, sugar, caffine and salt - all of which are considered to be adictive.

I avoid fried food, soda, caffine, really sugary or fatty foods because I know if I have them I WANT them like crazy for the next week.

There is actually a science to the evil cycle of eating foods high in sugar. I had posted this in a previous response in another thread:

"I actually was watching "Good Eats" last night and Alton explained why you are more satisifed after eating whole grain compared to processed foods w/ sugar. He explained that when you eat, your body releases insulin. Lots of processed/sugary foods=lots of released insulin which results in an overabundance of insulin with nothing to do. So, that triggers your body to want more sugary/processed foods to feed the insulin.(spike in sugar levels) If you eat whole grain etc, your body releases insulin at a more controlled rate making you feel full and not craving all the bad stuff. This is also a good example of why eating smaller meals every 3 hours is good for you (keeps your blood sugar levels at a consistant level)."

Buuut, M&M''s...nom nom nom

I agree completely! when I eat chocolate, I want more and more and more..that and baked goods like cookies and cakes and cinnamon rolls.
It''s very difficult to try to fight it

Fo Sho!!!! sugar fat and salt!

Grippo''s BBQ Potato Chips. Thank heavens they are regional.

I can say I''ve never been addicted to certain foods. I do have cravings sometimes so I don''t know if that counts.

I''m addicted to peanut butter and a nice cold beer. I can have any bread item with crunchy peanut butter for the rest of my life, and I''d die happy

Funny thing is I never used to like peanut butter nor beer before kids (pregnancies!)

I really believe sugary foods can be addictive. I think it also depends on if you have an addictive personality (like I do). I''m just no good at doing things in the middle, so I think that adds to my problems.

I went of all sugar and milk products in January and I feel so much better. I make sure I get my calcium (40 year old and don''t want brittle bones in my old age).

Dear Hudson Hawk-your craving for fried pickles gave me such a tickle. Rhyme not intended. Do they really make those? When I was preggo with my boys I craved green olives. I would buy huge jars and
stand at the fridge and eat them. I couldn''t get enough. As soon as I gave birth, they didn''t taste good to me anymore. With my daughter I ate huge bowls of watermelon. Funny thing, she doesn''t like fruit or
sweets of any kind.

I think sugar and fried fatty things are addictive. When I don''t eat them, I don''t crave them, when I do, I can''t get enough. Almost makes you wish you good go back to the early days when everything was cooked
at home and not so easily accessible. I mean, if you had to fry the chicken or french fries, would we want to go to all the trouble? If you couldn''t buy M & M''s in huge bags at Costco, would they call our names?
