It was my great grandmother's and I would like to replace the existing diamond with one I have from a pendant.

I would honestly just leave the ring be as a keepsake of your grandma. Since the setting is old, it could get damaged during modification to its structure. What about designing a replica of the ring but with a bigger diamond?

I’m not a jeweller, but I wonder if a princess cut diamond could be gently fitted in the space.

I say don't change it. It's a lovely old setting that was meant to have a petite diamond. The repair work will cost more than the ring is worth.

The setting is for one size only...you can't fit 10 lbs of potatoes in a 3pound bag.

Some people should keep the above advice in mind when getting dressed in the morning

I wouldn't modify that setting. In the end you'd wind up compromising the integrity of the setting and the stones may fall out.
