PS is a little slow, so I've been forum-hopping. Have you noticed how each forum has its own acronyms and abbreviations ... and does anybody else find them jarring at first?

Ex 1: I was poking around on Marina Bychkova's Enchanted Doll's website, and I discovered she has a forum. Sweet! Except they keep calling the damned things EDs, which is not my first association. I think "eating disorder," which, given that the dolls are very slender, is almost enough to turn me off wanting one. (Almost. Those things are gorgeous. The next time I have a large chunk of change, they're going to be the primary competition against diamond studs. See pic below.)

Ex 2: I was looking up something about vintage clothing, and I came across a forum for Gothic Lolita fashion. Knowing that style catches some flack, the organizer thoughtfully appended an adjective: elegant. So they're EGL, which, for me at least, is sorta-kinda jarring.

And that's not even getting into the omnipresent STDs on this board ....

eating disorder was not the first ED that popped into my head.

The perils of late night TV.

I was also going to say STD. I had no idea what it was, other than a sexually transmitted disease, until I realized that people sent out 'Save the Date's' for their weddings. Uf.

I popped into the TTC thread (trying to conceive) and i couldn't work any of it out!! It was like a whole another language!

Yep, me too.

My favorite has always been of a school that I went to for a year, and the HS has the same name. They have this on their bus, clothes, etc. They are called the Fulton Unity Christian Knights. So, the F.U.C.K's. I could never wrap my mind around whey they would call themselves the knights when they knew what was going to be said. Oh well

haha those make me laugh too! BM threw me for a loop at first here. I couldn't figure out how "that" had any correlation to a wedding.

Those dolls are gorgeous! I've never seen one before. I love dolls!

You'd have to get some pretty nice studs to compete with the price of Maria's dolls. I've been following/drooling over her site/blog for quite a while now. Even the simplest custom doll is upwards of $2500, and when she sells the fully costumed ones (WHEN she sells them), it's closer to ten or fifteen grand. Not that they're not worth it... *sigh*

Regarding acronyms, I have enough trouble with Pricescope's, especially since some of them strike me as silly (DH, DD...). Why does everyone have to be "dear" or "darling" or whatever the "D" is for? I'd just put "H". Hee hee.

BM- to some, it's bridesmaid. To others, it's breast milk. To me, it's Bowel Movement. haha.

Oh, man! This may be the prize-winner for me. That one, they should have seen coming!

Packrat - me, too! I don't collect or follow them the way I do jewelry, but if I see a particularly delightful one, I usually can't resist. I have four now, and a puzzled FIL (FIL to my husband: "So, does she ... play with them?") Heh.

Julianna: Seriously? Oh, man ... I knew the baseline price, but I had no idea about the costumed ones. They're worth it - they most definitely qualify as art. But that will perhaps put that ambition a bit further into the future than I'd thought ....

The first time I saw DH on a forum I thought they were talking about baseball (Designated Hitter)
Now it's pretty much standard Internet slang. But the D doesn't always mean Dear or Darling :saint:

Every year in my neighborhood the Red Hat society ladies put on a P.M.S...

It stands for "Pretty Marvelous Sale" (yard sale) and no one has the heart to tell them that everyone thinks they are talking about Pre Menstrual Syndrome.

haha! @ the "F"s :D So then they'd have dumb Fs, smart Fs, ... Oh, that is awful! :D

I don't think I'll ever get used to people using STD and BM here on PS.

What are the odds it's deliberate on their part? From what I've read of the Red Hat Society, they can be pretty tongue-in-cheek sometimes ....

There's an organization that I deal with on occasion at work whose acronym is FML. It's very appropriate because that's what I feel like when I have to deal with them.

Heheheh - okay, that actually made me laugh out loud.

Maybe?

I actually enjoy immersing myself in the new acronyms of forums I frequent. First bridal ones, and then TTC opened up a WHOLE new world! What I DON'T like is when I get so comfortable with the new acronyms that they bleed over into other aspects of my life and I confuse all the people I talk/type to that aren't on forums. I posted something about DH on facebook and no one knew what I was talking about.

My work unit's acronym is PTSD -- which, unfortunately, is descriptive on many occasions.

There is a school that advertises on TV that gets me every time :" Send in your application to UTI." No one could have caught that when they were naming it?
