Ugh. Finally got the Robbins Bros (trying to upgrade) diamond and IGI (bah!) cert in.

Specs:
IGI Los Angeles
1.85 F/SI2
Cut/sym/polish: very good
Depth: 64.1
Table: 58
Crown angle: 36
Pav angle: 40.8
No Fluor
7.63x7.68x4.91mm
Thick girdle
HCA is 4
$15,495 (terrible markup, but then my trade-in diamond isn't worth $7195 either)

Small and deep, huh?

There's just no way, right? I'd pay like $10k for it after taxes and simple setting.

Oh and they'd give me a 60 day return period if I wanted to get it GIA certified.

Ok yeah. Moving on.

Yeh, no...can you give them more details on what you want like depth/table and angle combos?

They're trying to find me a better diamond. But they are pissy because I'm being an HCA stickler. Lol.

Ok yeah, walking away.

Yuk.

Depth: 64.1 ?... :knockout:

What is your trade in ring? Is it something we can see if another vendor would take as a trade in?

Also, I would stick to GIA only. Why are you allowing them to give you crap?

Nope, definitely not.

I'd deal with selling the diamond and get whatever you can and start fresh here where you can find many ideal cut diamonds!

I passed on the company as a whole and sold the ring (for a million dollars less than I paid...) on ebay. Thanks gang, I knew that diamond was crap at RB

Ok. I remember you now.

Have you talked to James Allen? I've heard (not verified) that sometimes they will take outside stones for toward a trade in. And your might qualify.

I'd start calling around to ERD, IDJ and JA and see if any of them will work with you. Tell them the truth: engagement fell through, you want a different diamond because you want to propose to a different lady.

If those don't work... try other PS jewelers that don't brand their own diamonds (so not BGD) and have an BM store.

If you do want to keep working with RB, I'd be very firm with them. They want to make this happen you are requiring GIA 3x and numbers that meet the cheat sheet (there is one we have, it's restrictive but working with Robbins Brother's that's a good thing).

Try Good Old Gold instead or alternatively keep dropping the price until you have someone interested. Just because they claim you are getting x or y for a trade in a lot of jewellers rip you off at the other end (like a stone with a dodgy certificate) or something that is cheap for a reason so they make you think that you are getting a great deal when really you are not.

Thank you for all of the advice. Wish I had asked sooner, as I didn't think to ask JA if they'd do a trade-in. I ended up accepting an offer on ebay and mailed the ring this morning. It's not nearly what I would have liked to get for it, I do realize that I'd never get the majority of what I paid back. I was hoping for half, but it didn't happen. I'm really glad I didn't go with the crappy diamonds that Robbins Bros kept pulling out for me. The cuts on all of them were awful (all 64%, or deeper, HCA's were 3.5 and up on all of them), and the prices were absurd. Getting cash for the ring made more sense than the high trade-in $$ at RB, where the diamonds and prices are utter crap.
