I'd like to get some feedback on the deal I'm getting for this diamond. Ive attached the GIA cert for it. $5875.

Edit-- this diamond is totally eye clean. It's actually clean with a loop as well. I went in and saw this diamond in person, didn't see any flaws to my untrained eye.

Slightly steep in the pavilion for that crown angle. I would give that stone a miss unless the price is really good and the price is good actually. Any idealscope image available?

This is what we call on Pricescope a steep deep, both crown and pavilion angles are not a good fit for each other being literally too steep and deep, light leakage can sometimes result from this angle combo. However as the angles are rounded and you have seen it in person, check the diamond out very carefully away from the store lights, see if the stone goes dead or if you can see a dark ring around the table, or dark patches on the surface of the diamond, if so this is leakage. Also compare it with others if you can to see how it looks.

Which angles are you guys referring to? I''m not too up on the details beyond the basics, sorry. Maybe I should have also included that probably the most impt thing to me aside from staying under $6000 on the diamond is the fire/brilliance. So you guys are suggesting that this will be severely compromised with this rock?

top angle is crown angle, bottom angle is pavilion angle.

The numbers are on a sliding scale and dependent on the table size too. Use the cut adviser as a first cut. https://www.pricescope.com/cutadviser.asp

Score below a 2 is worth further consideration. This stone might show some leakage, might not be too bad, depending on which way the angles are rounded by GIA, which is why an Idealscope image is require. So if you are the risk taking kind, and do not have access to an Idealscope image, take it to an independent appraiser and get it appraised.

Well, I input:

Total depth: 62%
Table: 56%
Crown 35%
Pavillion 41%
Cutlet 0

And I get a score of " 2.3 - Very Good - Worth buying if the price is right"

So for $5875, totally eye-clean...what do you think? Unless I''m doing this wrong..

This link explains more about crown and pavilion angles and the various parts of a round diamond.

http://diamonds.pricescope.com/crn_pav.asp

The crown and pavilion angles are the main engines which drive the light return of a diamond so are very important. The angles in the case of your diamond are what we call a steep deep ( you will here that term a lot around here), which means the angles are too steep and deep to work well together, leading to the enemy which is light leakage. As I explained earlier, the angles are actually rounded by GIA so in actual fact they might not be as steep and deep as they appear. Difficult to prove this without an Idealscope image, but if you follow what to look for above as I explained you will be in a better position to get a better idea whether this diamond shows leakage or not.

As explained there is a chance it could show leakage or not, no way for us to tell without an image. If you wish, make the sale final on it checking out with an independant appraiser who is skilled in evaluating cut, here is a tool you can use to find an appraiser in your area, - and get it in writing that you can return the diamond for any reason should it not check out to your satisfaction with an independant appraisal.

Thanks. I am getting it independently appraised already by someone on that list (made arrangements previously). The diamond has a full 30 day refund.

You are covered then. Good luck. :)

Since we are buying sight unseen, we tend to err on the side of caution, so you may still get a great stone. The appraiser will tell you more.

No problem at all then, all avenues are covered!

Thanks guys, I really hope it checks out well! It was a beautiful rock, not the most glistening I''ve seen, but considering its price and beautiful color I was impressed. I hope it works out as I hope to take a knee very very soon after appraisal!
