So many possibilities....

Assuming this isn't a hypothetical question, what style are you looking for? Do you want one diamond (solitaire) or multiple (cluster)?

Do you have a style that you especially like? White gold, yellow gold or platinum?

For vintage I like to look at Etsy or RubyLane, EBay is good but it can be difficult weeding out the junk from the good stuff if you're not experienced:

If you give us some examples we can help you find something :wavey:

My best friend and her now hubby purchased a single ring that doubled as an ER then wedding ring. This was in 1991. 1 carat solitaire oval mounted on a “dome” ring, which were popular back then . She still loves her ring as do I. More bang for the buck. I have zero idea what they paid for it....i loved the idea of the single ring.

We went to a local jewellery shop and got a 3/4 eternity ring with black diamonds and platinum custom made to fit with my engagement ring we had purchased previously (it was not a set )for under 1500. I really quite like it. At .80 carats its not as big as some of the ladies rings here but I like the size a lot. Plus this thing has been a tank and I need that.
Depending on what stones you want, sizes, and what metal it's probably very doable!
One more anecdote. This was almost decade ago so I am not sure if prices have changed but as a graduation present I went to a local guy and picked out a half eternity regular diamond band in gold and it was about 500.
So yeah check locally and check online at some of the recommended vendors. I think there might be good options between them:)

eBay. Go vintage, set aside $150-200 for sizing, polishing, prong check and repairs, etc.

Definitely not hypothetical. I’m trying to do this. So far I had settled on a very heavy domed 18k yellow band with deep engraved pattern but I’m still thinking about what to do.. I was going to get one of the heavy gold domed bands from eweddingrings and have it engraved. I can have a very substantial looking piece that way. Just oooking did other ideas as I’m quite new to this and there is do much experience here.

Thank you. I am 5’10, 170 and I look silly with anything dainty so I think something quite plain and larger. It somehow needs to be pretty though. That’s why I was thinking thick heavy wider engraved band

Here’s an eBay search string you can use as a starting point. Just copy the whole thing into a eBay search box.

(14k, 18k, platinum, plat) ladies (wedding, engagement) ring set diamond, -likr, -gf, -filled, -fill, -simulant, -cz, -crystal, -“gold over”, -finish

ETA adding the word “vintage” to the search box excludes too many good possibles. You can use the filters to exclude new merchandise... though you run the (very very slight) risk of excluding “new old stock” that way.

A few possibilities:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/LADIES-14K-WHITE-GOLD-DIAMOND-ENGAGEMENT-RING-SET-TDW-0-84CT-3-1G/183465636106?hash=item2ab767710a:g:NmIAAOSwt6Nbs5nM&LH_ItemCondition=10|4

eBay or a decent Pawnbroker - I’d want “best bang for buck” and I’m pretty good at hunting out a bargain.

Right. I need to scout out pawnbrokers

My son's bride is also someone with enough finger space that a tiny ring wouldn't do. If you pick out now what sort of metal you are seeking, that will help when you find a bargain. For example some people don't like/don't look good in yellow gold. Also do you know what sort of diamond cuts are preferred?

It’s on eBay, it’s a vintage cluster ring. Very nice. I have a few others in my watch list with coloured gems I can share if you like.

Start following vintage jewelers on IG. This ring is sold, but it was $1,295 so well within your budget and had great finger coverage. Even if you don’t buy from them having some knowledge of vintage prices can help if you negotiate if you find something at a local pawn shop.

This is it. Seller is long established business seller, 100% positive feedback. Will accept returns and also on some items will accept a “lay away arrangement”. So if you’re keen, message her first to ask.

I won’t buy this since you’re watching it but this is really something I would buy. Love it. Thanks for the idea.
You love it, you buy it!
That’s why I told you!
I watch dozens of rings ha ha, I’m not in the market for that one - there’s another of the sellers that I would love if I had the $$$.

Oh thanks. I showed it to my fiancé and we shall see. I think it’s perfect.
