Well,

I''m currently in Europe until September and plan on proposing to my girlfriend when she visits me in a few weeks. The only problem is that the ring is still in the US. My plan all along has been to have my parents give her some things to put in her checked luggage for me (socks, food from home, etc) and sneak the ring in there somehow. However, I''m starting to get a bit worried about the idea. If her luggage is lost, it cannot be covered by the airlines insurance. Also, somebody working for the airport could go through the luggage and make off with the ring pretty easily. My other options are to put it in her carry on somehow, to ship it over, or to just have a temporary ring and have the real one waiting for her at home. I don''t like the idea of putting it on her carry-on because she won''t know it''s in there and may not guard her bag as closely as she should. Also, if TSA goes through her bag and pulls that out, it will ruin the surprise. I really would rather not ship it because it could get lost, arrive late, get stolen, or a number of other things. It''s also quite pricey and I''d have to deal with customs, which is a pain. I''d also rather not use a temporary ring, but it''s looking like perhaps the best option. Has anybody ever had a situation like this? Would you put an e-ring in checked luggage? Will my own personal ring insurance cover it if it gets stolen or lost from the luggage? Thanks for the advice.

Do NOT have your parents sneak it into her luggage. You are setting her up a difficult and possibly very expensive situation at customs. She could even be charged with smuggling!

FedEx offers a secure and fast shipping approach but if you aren''t prepared to do that, use a temporary ring.

So, having a ring in her luggage will get her in trouble with customs? I definitely don''t want to deal with that.

As far as shipping, it seems like Fed Ex and UPS only cover up to $500 in valuables. Will an individual insurance plan (for the ring) cover it if it gets lost during shipping? Also, will I have to pay taxes or duties on the ring if I have it shipped to Europe? I suppose I should have thought this through a bit more. Any help is appreciated.

Have a temp on hand and give her the real thing when you get home. She will be excited twice!

Well, I suppose I should have done a bit more research before posting this thread. It looks like getting the ring over here will either be super expensive (with VAT taxes, customs duties, and shipping) or illegal (sneaking it into luggage). Guess I''ll have to track down some sort of temporary ring. That''s a bummer. Well, thanks for the help, and if anybody else wants to chime in I''d appreciate it.

It's not ideal, but it's not necessarily a bummer either! It's a chance to get creative and have some fun! Maybe you can fashion a ring out of something that represents the city you'll be proposing in... or incorporate local rocks or something into the temporary ring! Hit the local souvenir, antique, and tchotchke shops; I'm sure something will inspire you. Heck, you'll probably end up with so many cool options that it will be hard to decide on one. And as for your lucky girlfriend, well she'll end up with three wonderful mementos of that special event -- (NOT in order of importance!) her stand-in ring, her beautiful engagement ring... and you!
