A marquise for my Van Craeynest?

Last week I was fortunate enough to score a Van Craeynest set on craigslist. I just love it. I already have a wedding set, so these rings will be split up, sized, and worn on different fingers. The engagement ring came with a small round diamond.

I also have a marquise I inherited, and I've been searching for a setting for that, with no luck. The other day, it occurred to me that the marquise might work in the VC. I've done my best to do a rendering of what it would look like. I actually think it might be a great combo, but I'm afraid I may just be hoping too hard or looking at it too long! I'd appreciate any opinions regarding whether it might look nice. Last thing I want to do is ruin this ring, which is already lovely as is. I think if I did it, I would consider a very fine bezel around it to match the bezel around the diamonds in the setting.

I think it would look better set E/W - in fact, that setting looks almost as if it was designed with a marquise in mind - but setting it E/W would obliterate much of the VC design.

I agree! -- but no, I wouldn't mess with the setting to that degree.

Ok, I love the marquise with your VC but I just cant get on board with the E/W . It just seems to modern to go with a VC.

(Can you photoshop one so we could see it...I could change my mind).

Well, I'm definitely not doing E-W, I could see where if it were set down in there where there are currently diamonds it would look cool. On my phone now so I can't mock it up. Anyway doing it that way would destroy the setting.

Ok, well everyone has different taste but if at least some folks can see it I guess I'm not completely off base, thanks for the feedback! I have an appointment with a jeweler next week, I'll see what he says.

And I'm so excited and a little jealous you found this set on Craig's List! I wouldn't have expected to find something like that there!

I like it. You've got a setting that needs a stone and a stone that needs a setting. I'd do it

I guess that I'm the lone dissenter. I prefer a simple setting for marquise diamonds, so that they don't start to resemble the '80's look. I have learned the hard way to set diamonds the way the original designer meant to set them--rounds in a round setting, etc. I always regret experimenting
But that's just me. The first rule is to do what you like!

Oh gosh, I wouldn't consider it either. You'll have to replace the head for one thing, and I don't see a marquise really being right for that setting at all! I think it needs an OEC or a fairly rounded antique cushion. That is my favorite VC set!

Much as I like good marquise stones (and VC), marrying these two looks more hodgepodgey to my eyes than intrinsically harmonious. Maybe a smaller, chubbier marquise would work for me, but I think the mounting really is best suited for a round, a rounded cushion, or maybe an Asscher, whose rectangular lines would at least echo those of the vertical channels right alongside the center stone's "seat."

Thank you MollyMalone and yes, that's the one. I was stalking it on ebay for awhile where it didn't sell, and then I found it on craigslist a few states away. I took a chance, made an offer and paid via paypal. Fortunately, she turned out to be a lovely seller and even though the post office seemed to have a lost it for a few days , it all worked out.

Really you think an asscher? I have an asscher. I think I'm falling into the camp of round or rounded cushion though as DS suggested. Keep it small like the existing stone, and maybe just replace that stone with something more vintage.

I think that would be awesome! If that was the set that was on ebay, I was soooo tempted to buy it myself because that is the setting I have had my eye on for the longest time. I just didn't because I could still end up with that setting for my AVR. But I definitely would have reset that center stone with an OEC, AVR, or rounded cushion/AVC. I am glad it found a home with a PSer!!! I am a little envious!!!

Like ds, I would opt for a round or rounded cushion. Those days when the VC set seemed lost in transit must have been nerve-wracking, so glad for you that there was a happy ending to your wait!!

Aw, thanks guys! DS, that eBay listing was a little scary to me because she had no feedback and did not offer returns. When I saw the craigslist ad, I felt like it was more legit -- like someone who just never had a reason to use eBay until she had to sell her wedding set.

What I don't understand is that the diamond is an AGS ideal according to the 2001 appraisal, but that document also indicates a depth of 63.5%. Is that possible? The AGS report did not come with the stone.

I saw that depth, too, but since I would have replaced the diamond, I didn't care. I think it will be fine to use for another purpose such as bezeled bracelet or one of a pair of studs, etc. Not sure if it is possible. Maybe it was sold by an AGS affiliated jeweler who called it ideal cut, perhaps?

I saw the listing on ebay too. I am glad that this set found a good home with a PSer who will love it.

Regarding the center stone, call me traditional but I think I like a round stone. I like the idea of a vintage stone since VC designs evoke a different time.

You asked for opinions, so I will offer mine, but I don't think it matters (what you like matters). I would SO NOT do that. I don't like marquise diamonds except antique ones with culets, and I only like those a tiny bit. I think the rings are totally lovely as they are, and it would be a shame to mess with them like that.

Asscher might be very nice! But, since you asked, a marquise would not be an option if this were my set.

Thank you for all the opinions everybody! For now I will just have them split and sized to wear. I'm not sure I have the vision to see an asscher in it, but in any case I think my particular stone is too big for the setting. I'm thinking rounded cushion when I have the extra funds.
