hello,

recently i purchased a diamond from a work colleague's husband. he is a diamond buyer for a wholesale jeweler. he showed me several diamonds but i chose an F/SI1/Excellent cut stone. he had mini-EGL certificates for all the stones, including the one i chose. i must preface this post by stating that he came highly recommended, and his wife, whom i work with, is an established executive within the company that i work, and many people have bought stones through them.

after showing me the stone, he delivered it to me 2 days later, after having it set. he didn't give me a certificate, and said that he was waiting for it in the mail. is it possible that he is waiting on the full page certificate to give me? i don't understand why he does not have the certificate already. i still don't have the certificate and it has been over a week.

also, lately, i have been looking at the stone that i have now, and there are obvious inclusions in the stone, visible with the naked eye, although more visible from the side of the stone, than from top-down. my understanding of SI1, is that inclusions are generally visible only at 10x. the inclusion that i see is very dark and very obvious. is it possible that i have an SI1 stone?

i took the stone to a jeweler when i happen to be at the mall. with only a 10x loop, they were only able to make out EGL, not the full laser inscription number. i plan on taking it to someone with a scope so that they can get me the full number. how i can verify the certification of this EGL stone?

again, i might just be paranoid. these are very well respected people, and maybe i just didn't notice such a large inclusion when i first viewed the stone - although he did provide a loop and i could see 2 inclusions at 10x. what should i do?

Welcome Wren!

With an SI1 it is not uncommon to be able to see something with the naked eye, that is why it has been given the grade it has. Also SI clarity diamonds are not created equal, some are eyeclean and some aren't. Sometimes as a little time passes. you notice more about a diamond as you wear it and see it in different lights, this is normal. Regarding the report, sometimes a dealer only gets a full report if the diamond has one, once he has purchased the diamond or a client has, then the full report is sent, but your best bet is to check with him that this diamond has a full EGL report and not just the card. It depends but some feel some branches of EGL can be less strict on grading, so an SI1 could be an SI2 etc - same with colour. Also EGL graded diamonds often carry lower prices than those of GIA and AGS. Does this vendor have a return policy? You could get an independant appraisal done on the diamond ( not by a jeweller where they may be a conflict of interest) to see how this diamond checks out.

If you are truly unhappy, I would contact him ASAP to see if he could find you another diamond. If he has a good rep to keep with his wife's colleagues, chances might be he will want to please you and work with you.

Here is an example of an EGL report.

Also EGL website www.eglusa.com You can try going to online results on the left, click and you will see a report check. You can try entering the number and it should ID your diamond if it is EGL USA, if not you could call customer services and they may be able to help and tell you where to try if it is another EGL branch Europe, Israel, Antwerp etc. There may be enough info to help you on the little card which came with the diamond.
