I am not sure if I am posting this in the right spot or not. My apologies in advance.

I was very happy to find all this information. My fiance and I are getting married this fall. We do not have an engagement ring yet. We have lived together for the past five years. We have saved up for quite some time for this ring and our wedding. This will be the most money we have ever spent on us too.
We were clueless when we started looking. I guess we thought that the places we went would tell us what we needed to know. Wrong! :) After looking online I see the prices are much better for the grading. We are also the shy quiet types so shopping online without having to deal with a salesperson getting us flustered is nice. I guess I am glad we went to some stores because I had never even seen a diamond close up before. I did decide a few things too. I like the princess stones, and I like the thinner band, with channel setting(10-12stones) and a solitaire, because of money, I like the white gold. We have a budget of $2-3 for the ring.

Now here is our problem, we don''t have much time. It looks good buying online, however, what if we do need to return it, that may cause an issue cutting so close to our wedding. So I was hoping to find out if there were any very good places to shop in the twin cities?
Or if you could tell me relisticly, for my budget, what can I expect to get? From all the reading we have done, we know we want a very good cut. We were hoping for a .55 or more. I know carat doesn''t equal size. We were hoping for it to look balanced with the setting. We also were hoping for F-G/VS-SI. Am I silly to think this is possible?

It seems like he and I are sitting at our table comparing Fcolor with SI2 this etc, I just want a pretty ring and to be married. Does it really come down to a numbers game? I guess it feels like there is more pressure to decide "the right ring" because there is so much money at stake and because of how special the occasion is. Any info/opinions/advice would be appreciated.
Thank you!

Brian Knox I believe is local to you, has been on this board until recently, and may be a helpful resource; I enjoyed his posts.

Best wishes,

Oh thank you very much! This will help. Have you ever known a store to match an online price? Would they laugh at us if we said we knew we could get " " for this elsewhere? The only time I tried bargaining was in Mexico, and that was for 6 dollar margarita glasses.
Thanks,
M

well, i suppose it can''t hurt to try!
(you didn''t pay $6 for margarita glasses in mexico did you?)

If I did, I don''t remember.

Is it very common to buy diamonds online and a setting at a local store?
Will local stores set them for you? Is it better to order say a cheaper temp. setting with the diamond online and then have it taken out and reset?
Sorry for all the questions.

Okay, this may sound silly. I kinda wish there was a pro. service that would come with you shopping. I would pay to have an expert at my side there to tell me the truth, not just trying to get my sale. Ever heard of this?

haven''t heard of it. but, it has been suggested before!!

is diamond purchasing a big deal? yes, it is, but you don''t want to get too caught up in reports and analysis. you need to trust your eyes. you will be the one wearing this diamond. if you see something you like, buy it! you can second guess yourself over and over, but at some point, you are just going to have to trust your own judgement and make a purchase. of course, you are going to want to learn all you can about making a good diamond decision, and there is plenty of helpful information on this site to assist you in that area. as long as you don''t rush the process, you will be fine. really

best of luck to you!

belle is right on the money. First educate yourself, then go see some diamonds. You are buying a diamond not a piece of paper. At some point you really need to trust your eyes. Yes the certs help and they are important, but not as important as your eyes.

In lieu of a pro at your side, take good notes and ask advice/opinions of people here on this board. They offerthem up freely

, and can help be a sounding board and guide as you sort through it all. It''s true that your eyes should make the final judgement, but it can take a while of viewing stones to see differences, so people here can help you with specs, pictures if you get them, etc.

It does not sound silly...in fact I know some online diamond stores do have designated people who perform personal diamond searchs for new and experianced diamond shoppers alike.
