hey all,
The engagement rignt hat I bought cam mounted in the traditional setting from Bluenile, here is the link:

I have two questions. 1) Could I get it reset in a setting that is higher and would a higher setting be a bad thing? 2) Keeping it simple, are there any alternatives to this setting besides that ones that I have seen on james allen?

thanks! ! !

There are lots of simple settings, it just depends where you want to get it reset. I personally wouldn't get it set too much higher as it will me more likely to snag on things etc. The higher the setting, the less easy it is to wear in my opinion. But if you really want to go higher, you could look at a cathedral setting, the stones are usually set higher and the band can be made thinner too, which really makes the stone pop, especially with the smaller sizes stones. Another good thing with the cathedral settings are that you can usually have a wedding band that sits flush.

I'm not 100% sure about what you mean when you say alternatives to this setting, but there is 6 prong, 4 prong, x-prong etc, the list goes on!

Here is a link to WF site and their settings. They will reset your stone for a fee I believe. I personally love their Classic Tiff Replica (I am biased though, it's my setting) and their legato head is just devine too.

Good old gold has lots of settings too. Knock yourself out, there is tons of them! The Mark Morrell ones are to die for really!

Good luck!!

Couple observations:

1) The head they put on that ring now is already high. Any higher may look out of place.
2) To answer your question, yes the head is replacable, so if you want a higher setting it can be swapped with a taller head.
3) You can even get a head for a slightly bigger stone and have a jeweler close it up and set it high so that it appears taller if you really want, although I wouldn''t recommend this.
4) Any jeweler could make this alteration, it would not be difficult.

Conclusion:

I say leave it as is ;)

I have a cathedral setting from WF and I love it. I originally didn''t want a high setting because I have two preschool aged kids and didn''t want to be scratching them with it or constantly knocking it on things as I keep up with them and their active selves, but it hasn''t been a problem. I find that the higher setting does seem to give the stone a bit of extra wow and just looks elegant to me.

MY diamond was set quite high, I just had it modified with a new head (Stuller solstice), and it doesn''t look too high, however it does stand out!! It is well protected, and you can see the paviliion of the diamond still (which I love). Any band sits flush with it, and the diamond sure POPS! Just a suggestion. The solstice head on a cathedral sure makes a statement (Just my bias opinion)
