My wife is looking to upgrade her diamond from a 1 ct. to a 2ct. round brilliant.

Given the current economy, is now a good time to buy 2 ct. diamonds? Have the prices gone down due to low demand, or gone up due to the "safety" of a diamond investment?

Also, what do I do with her old diamond? We have the original wedding set it came with, so should we put it in that setting and try to sell it on Ebay?

I''ve heard nothing but great things about this forum. Please show me some love!

You can check trends in diamond pricing on this thread:

I wouldn't consider diamonds a "safe" investment. You would be lucky to get 50% of purchase price when reselling, and that would only be with a well cut GIA or AGS certified stone.

With that in mind, what about taking your wife's 1ct and making a pendant or some other piece of jewelry out of it. You just won't get much selling it.

I don''t generally consider diamonds an investment either, but some people buy gold and diamonds as "investments." Do you think you get a better deal selling a diamond if it is part of a nice wedding set, or just a stand-alone loose stone?
