1) Is it a good/bad idea to buy an engagement band at a local jeweler and a diamond online?

2) I''m looking for a diamond in the .7-.75 carat range. I''m mostly interested in an excellent cut. How is
this? I''d also like the price to be around $2000 if at all possible (just the diamond).

Any help would be very appreciated.
Thanks

It''s not inherently either, it just depends on where you can find what you like. In theory (and this won''t hold true for all online or local jewelers) it may be more economical to find the setting online. It''s certainly easier to just find a setting you like at an online dealer and have them source the diamond for you, and set it, to avoid sending the setting/diamond to separate places etc.

Someone more expert will weigh in on the specific diamond questions

I had the same question a while back, and went into two B&M stores and asked them about setting a diamond not from them and gave me quotes of any where from $150- $350 for setting fee plus your setting you''d pay sales tax, and if they had any warranty it would only be on the setting itself and that they were not responsible for the diamond really during setting ( I didn''t like to hear that) I would recommend trying to get it all in from the same place, but if you insist in a local jeweler on your setting then definitely insure your loose diamond before setting.

Hi scume,

Yes that is a good diamond you linked. If having a h&a diamond is important to you then hearts images are really essential in order to judge the overall cut precision, however I don''t think JA provide them. But it is a very well cut diamond from what I can tell.

With setting, the main risk is if anything should happen to the diamond whilst setting, usually the setter or store won''t cover the diamond against damage should anything happen to it if they did not sell the diamond, so it is worth factoring this into your decision process.

Diamond looks good.

I bought my setting from a local jeweler and a diamond online. I actually got multiple quotes from a variety of jewelers and I got a deal that was significantly below list (didn''t hurt that platinum prices were low at the time, too).

A local jeweler, if reputable and trustworthy, can be very helpful because you then have a place to go to locally to look at other jewelery, get your ring serviced/cleaned, etc. My jewelery also set the diamond that I bought online for free in the setting.
