I''m a newbie to all this, but I''ve been reading a bit and am considering the following for my girlfriend:

Setting:
Ritani Hearts Setting in 2 tone http://www.ritani.com/rings/eng_rings/solitair_eng_rings/1021A/1021A_tt.htm#

Diamond:
1.0+ Carat
Color: D-F
Cut: Ideal (and scores < 2 on the HCA)
Clarity: Si1 or better (as long as it is eye-clean)
Polish, Symmetry: Excellent or better, preferably Ideal

The questions i have are:

1. Does the Ritani setting I''m looking at merit any specific cut considerations? I.e... would certain proportions look better/worse in this setting as its set a little differently than a Tiffany setting.

2. How can one verify that an SI1 stone is eye-clean before buying from an online retailer?

3. Anyone have an idea how much the Ritani Setting will cost? It seems several people online sell Ritani, but have no prices posted.

4. I''m looking to spend 6000-6500$ on the Diamond. It seems as though its pretty tight to get these specs in that price range. If I were to budge on some of the specs, where would be the best place to do so and affect the look of the diamond the least?

5. Flourescense....This puzzles the heck out of me. To me it seems really cool if the stone glows in UV, but apparently it hurts the value. Does a flourescent stone look appreciably different than a non-flourescent one in normal day-to-day lighting?

6. How much discernable difference in polish and symmetry is there between ideal and excellent?

Thanks so much to anyone who even read all of this

The proportions of a round cut are optimized for light return, not the setting. Anyy round cut would look great in this.

Ask for at elast 10X pictures, and a nice return policy. Due diligence requires for you to ask "is it eye clean" before buying, for what this is worth (even if the seller is perfectly honest, your eyes are not his). Looking at the inclusions plot on the GIA certs may help for some stones.

No, sorry.

If you save on anything, save on color: D-F is ambitious, but G-H will look just great in the whitest setting. A great cut will make more of a difference to the looks of the stone than an extra color grade.

5. Flourescense....This puzzles the heck out of me. To me it seems really cool if the stone glows in UV, but apparently it hurts the value. Does a flourescent stone look appreciably different than a non-flourescent one in normal day-to-day lighting?

Less than 1% of all RBCs (about 3% of medium-strong flourescent ones) look hazy under normal lighting. I/E. not chance you are going to see a difference. Value? That is what you decide it to be. Fluorescence will not show and will not change the resale value of the stone ( which is disspointng for any diamond to start with.)

6. How much discernable difference in polish and symmetry is there between ideal and excellent?
None. Good is still good. Other cut parameters determine light return (and hence the look of the stone). Surely you know what Pricescope's tutorial is all about

Hope this helps. If you post a choice of stones, surely there will be even more help comming from Pricescope.

Welcome, J.

Your questions are well thought out, yay!

Did you take our new diamond quiz? It may help answer some Q's for you.

Anyway....

The Ritani piece should be fine, and not require any special requirements though not sure what you meant?

SI clarity can never really be 'guaranteed', but if you work with a reputable vendor, and trust them to eyeball the stone for you from ALL ANGLES, then you should be fine if they say it's eye clean. This may also mean you should work more with vendors who carry the stones in their inventory as opposed to those who have alot of virtual stones--where they don't necessarily have access to view the stone themselves. We ran into this when shopping online, wanted an E SI stone and the wholesaler said it was eye-clean but the vendor could not get the wholesaler to give us any pictures to show the stone, and the vendor could not guarantee eye-cleanliness because they had never seen the stone! Easier to work with those who have the stone in their hot little paws and can give you their opinion. Also asking to see pictures of the stone and closeups of the inclusions as well will help make you more comfortable, because if a stone has an inclusion in the middle that looks big but its at 40x mag, chances are that baby is so tiny in reality...it may make you feel better.

Your budget is pretty good I think...but you may have to budge slightly and I would do it on COLOR. D-F in my opinion is a nice to have, G would be a more affordable option and the stone will still face up very white, I have a G stone which is super white and I also have an H Regent stone and it is so blazingly white, I don't see any color in it. So if you can budge, I would move that color to include G's and you may find more of a range. Stay tight on cut and your clarity is good, though you may find some SI2s that end up being eye clean and save you a bundle from SI1 even...we have had a few instances lately of this happening. So then you could maybe do F SI2 for the same price as a G VS2 or similar.

What affects the look of the diamond the most? In my opinion the cut, but as long as you keep it excellent, it does not need to be 'superideal'..it will look it's best. Second would most likely be color and 3rd be clarity...but as long as it's eye clean, no use in paying extra there.

Fluorescence doesn't affect the stone unless you are talking something like E and strong fluor and even then it's iffy. So up to medium blue should be fine, but if it's strong, you should check to be sure it's not milky....then you get the cool effects with none of the extra milkiness.

I don't think fluor stones look that different, but some tend to think they 'pop' more at you with some fluor. Many stones at least have 'slight fluor', so don't be surprised if you run across those.

Ideal and Excellent symm and polish are pretty much the same thing. GIA calls it EX and AGS calls it Ideal.

A quick search among the stones with known HCA's <2 here listed 16 choices. The search was for :

"Excellent cut, AGS0 Including, H&A Including, 0.95 - 1.05 cts, F - H color, SI1 - SI2 clarity"

I went for 0.95-1.05 since the depth of the stone blurrs this weight difference.

Take your pick, and surely more comments will come from all sides.

Here's one E-SI1 pick... for example.

Which is clearly topped by THIS awsome stone which tops the charts for light return (and most others)! IF IT CAN GET BETTER, LET ME KNOW! And I would surely place alot of value on Jonathan's indication about wether this is eye clean.

Why did I get both stones form the same site... I simply know no other posting a similar amount of detail about their stones. These are great examples to start with.

I found the Ritani website pretty interesting in that the ring images are not photo’s but computer Cad generated. Very nice work

I was wandering wether this presentation does not rise inflated expectations about the finish and level of precision of the finished product.

I've seen the setting in person, and I think it looks every bit as good as far as finish and precision in person as it does on the website.
