Hi, I'd like some input on how this vendor is trying to sell me a diamond. On the one hand they seem nice but I have some big concerns about other parts (decided not to name the seller for now, not trying to have a dig)... I'll trim down to what I consider the most suspect statements:

'Also, for the 0.5 carat diamond that I mentioned yesterday, we have had a customer in the showroom today with one of my sales guys and they have fallen in love with the stone. I happened to be working today, so I have said at the moment it might have been sold (to you). Hence if did want this diamond if you could let me know by Monday that would be good.'

It's possible but I think that's just a sales pressure tactic.

'The stone is also completely eye clean and is a very nice G+ colour with no negative green or brown overtones. In fact this diamond has passed all of our quality control checks and is a gorgeous option. If you would like you can come and view the stone, it is available to view at our showroom in *****. I can absolutely promise you that it is a very rare and beautiful item.'

G+? Ok I am sure that he shouldn't have said that (he's the company director and should know better surely?). Also, I wouldn't say a 0.5 carat h&a SI2 G was rare but ok.

No pics of the h&a are provided but I am sure I could view this in person if I chose to travel for it. Do you think in light of the above comments I should back off?

The diamond with the platinum mount is just under £2100, approx $3500 (incl UK tax which is 20%).

They do have a good returns policy btw, free returns with 100% refund within 60 days (I'd rather not waste both the vendors and my time by buying and returning without being at least fairly confident I want it...).

Some extra detail on the diamond itself:

GIA XXX
0.5
G
SI2 (crystal, he says it is 100% eye clean).

hca is 1.4, pav is 41, crown 34, table 56%, depth 61.6%.

Let me know what you think about price/seller honesty etc.

Thanks.

What he said could be true or a sales tactic. The overtone (should be undertone, I think) comment is strange regarding G color, though. The great news is, there are thousands of half carat diamonds from which to choose, so you should have no pressure at all! I would only buy if I had magnified images of the stone and an idealscope image. Do you have those?

If not, what is your budget for the stone and what setting do you want? Maybe we can help you find something better that has pictures and images. I wouldn't consider SI2 without magnified images.

Thanks for the reply. I really like both of the examples you posted, not sure how hard it would be to find somewhere that would sell me a mount and mount the diamond for me though in the UK. I can only seem to find designer brands on the whiteflash site, I'm looking for a fairly standard not too highly set 6 claw platinum mount, single solitaire setting. Any idea how much they are from WF?

As for my budget, for the whole ring I was hoping for £2k ideally but a bit over is fine, under is good also lol ^^. .5-.7, F-I colour, with optimal optics and eye clean is what I am looking for.

Thanks again for helping.

That sales tactic of "better buy now, someone else wants it too" is one of the oldest in Willy Loman's book. Just ignore it.

I was haggling for something earlier this year and we were about 10% apart on price. The salesman (whose name turns up a few times in a search of the pricescope archives) told me someone else was "very interested" so they wanted to know if I would pay more to lock it in. Basically they wanted me to negotiate against myself. I said, "great, hope they enjoy it." A few days later he wrote to accept my offer.

G+??? That's odd. I've never seen that on a GIA cert, and this stone is being represented by the seller as having been graded by GIA. Tell the seller to provide you with the GIA cert # because you won't make a decision without reviewing it online, on GIA's website, first

Welcome to PS. We'll find you a better stone with real, confirmed certifications so that you pay what the stone is actually worth.

It's possible but I think that's just a sales pressure tactic. No way to know, it is possible that someone else is interested in this diamond as they say but don't feel pressured if you aren't ready to buy. It's a big decision and plenty of other diamonds out there

I think the meaning of G + probably refers to in the seller's opinion, that this G stone is closer in colour grade to an F perhaps, I could be wrong but this isn't an unusual way to describe how a diamond's colour grade presents itself.

No pics of the h&a are provided but I am sure I could view this in person if I chose to travel for it. Do you think in light of the above comments I should back off? No, not at all, I would say if you want a H&A diamond then you might be better off going for a branded stone such as Infinity, Whiteflash A Cut Above, Brian Gavin Signature etc, or a branded H&A diamond from any of the vendors with supporting images.

The diamond with the platinum mount is just under £2100, approx $3500 (incl UK tax which is 20%).

Let me know what you think about price/seller honesty etc. The diamond has great potential from the basic info but as you are aware, images are really needed now. Price looks ok, seller I can't comment on as I don't know who it is, but concerning the opening statement about possible sales pressure tactics, if you aren't sure, don't go ahead, there will be other diamonds!

Thanks.

Thank you everyone for your input. I've decided not to buy the ring mentioned in the OP. I've quoted farmer gal's post since I just want to say that the diamonds/setting link is much appreciated and it's nice to see how cheap the settings in platinum can be :).

Going to do some more thinking myself and decide when I want to buy (and I'll ask more questions then ^^).

Thanks again everyone.
