Hi everyone,

I''ve searched the forums and there''s lots of questions on sizing but i haven''t seen this one answered.

My girl only wears rings on her middle fingers right now, so i have nothing to gauge the size of her ring finger ... but i don''t want to ask. I want it to be a surprise.

Any idea on how much smaller (in size) a ring finger typically is from a middle finger? One size? half a size?

Right now I believe her middle finger is a 5.5. She''s small, 5 foot 1", 103 lbs with smallish fingers. So, i''m guessing 4.5 for the e-ring. I''m already sacrificing platinum for white gold in case I get the size very wrong ... but I''d like as much input as possible.

Thanks in advance!

J

One size difference is a safe bet... I think. The difference might be more, but one size sounds safe.

Platinum can be sized just as well as gold. It is the design of the ring that might limit sizing though. What do you have in mind ?

Some Pricescope posters have set their diamonds in temporary settings (something inexpensive to hold diamond on finger through the proposal) with the understanding that a "final" setting will be chosen by the girl. That is one way to solve ring technicalities, I guess.

Thanks for your reply.

My understanding was that platinum rings are "cast" and in order to resize them you have to use a laser to remove some of the material. I know it can be done, but that its much more difficult and more costly. Is this true?

The design is a simple rendition of BlueNile''s cathedral setting.

Oh, Ana, what would a temporary setting be? Something that you return? or just the most inexpensive setting you can find?

Thx.

Never heard of this ! Sizing platinum rings is pretty much done in the same way gold rings are sized. The exotic laser carving sounds completely new to me - not even Ti rings have to be handled with such hi-tech means.

Temp setting is either cheap or returnable or both. Cheap might be something like $50-$100 (like this). Some jeweler would just throw in a setting like that, especially if there is some agreement that you will return to have the permanent ring made/ordered through them. Some charge explicitly. The sellers around here don't seem to have a specail policy for temp. settings - this service seems to depend on the stone you buy with no general rule to talk about.

As far as I know

Btw, I really love your proposal idea (the post on the other forum here)

My middle finger is two sizes bigger than my ring finger (7 and 5 right hand / 6.5 and 4.5 left hand).  I have no idea what is typical though.

My middle finger is 1.5 sizes bigger than my ring finger on my right hand, and 1.75 sizes bigger than my ring finger on my left hand.

My middle finger is 1.5 sizes larger than my ring finger-- the knuckle seems bigger? I dunno. I guess there''s no rule.

If you want to surprise her with a proposal (which is what happened with DH and me, and I loved it) take your best guess and buy a simple six-prong or four-prong Tiffany style setting. Looks fantastic (tradtional and showcases the diamond) and not too much $ in case it needs resizing.

Our jeweler told DH that if the ring was the wrong size, just to bring it back after he proposed ad they would exchange it for the proper size. Could that be an option with your jeweler?

However, DH got the proper size this way: he measured my ring finger when I was asleep, with a piece of string. I guess there is a chart somewhere that correlates mm length to a ring size??? (Anyone have this?)

GL!

I''m 5''2, about the same weight as your gf. My middle finger is a 5.25. My ring finger is around 4-4.25. So it''s about 1 size lower. You can always resize it, unless you are getting an eternity band.

I had to get my platinum e-ring resized (smaller), and I can tell that it was resized b/c it is a little thinner in that area. But... it was necessary. It''s not a big deal, though... only I can tell. If you aren''t getting an eternity band or something that can''t be resized, then guess what size she is and just get the ring. Then, if it doesn''t fit perfectly, then take it to your local jewelers for resizing.

My fiancee''s white gold wedding band can''t be resized b/c it has a design all the way around it... so I hope it fits when the wedding day gets here!!

i''m pretty much exactly the same size as your gf- 5''1" and just over 100, but i don''t know if there''s really any safe bet on guessing her ring finger size. mine is 3.5, but my middle finger knuckle is waaay bigger (bizarre?)- a 6 i think. so, i guess i was not very helpful. basically i think it''s really hard to guess

is there any way you could get her to try on a friend''s ring perhaps?
