A diamond from GOG, the setting from somewhere else

If I get the diamond from GOG and the setting from Abazias, who would I get to set the ring? How much would a local jeweler charge? An estimate if you will.

Have GOG set the stone, providing they approve the setting. They will then take responsibity while the diamond is being set, should the rare occurance happen where something goes wrong.

Ditto Ellen, I would avoid having the stone set somewhere other than where you purchased it. I know it''s rare, but I wouldn''t want to chance any damage happening to a stone that''s not covered.

I wouldn''t buy a setting from Abazias. Can you show us what the setting looks like?

I''ll most likely be purchasing a stone from Abazias and I''m curious to know why you wouldn''t buy a setting from abazias?
would you have similar reservations about purchasing a setting locally and having abazias set the stone?

When I bought my diamond from GOG, I had it set locally into a Tacori wedding set. The cost was $145 to set it and that included sending both rings back to Tacori for sizing. The ring already had a 1 ct. square head which is what I needed, so setting the diamond was probably not much of that cost, but I don't know as they did not break it down. I believe I have paid around $125 for setting a center stone that included a prong change. I would imagine that the cost would depend on how much work needed to be done to accomodate the center diamond.

I actually wanted to set my diamond locally because I wanted to view the diamond before setting it. What does your setting from Abazias look like? Can you send GOG the info and see if they have a setting like it? I know you have tried to post links to the setting you like, but I could never get the links to work.

Hi stroke,

I think ds may be on vacation, she hasn''t been around much. I will "guess" that possibly she was questioning the quality of their settings. But like I said, that''s just a guess. I don''t believe I''ve personally seen any of their settings from posters on here, so I can''t comment to that.

If ds sees this, I''m sure she''ll let you (and I) know if this is correct.

I''m in the process of having GOG set a stone, and they told me they are not responsible if anything should happen while setting the stone. I just figured I''d mention that, since it seems to contradict what was said earlier in this post. It''s also $100 per carat to set the stone. Hope this helps!

I neglected to mention that the stone I bought was from GOG, and I''m just having the setting set to them, so that they can mount it.

GOG can get you just about anything, even things not shown on their site. You have to contact Marie about settings.

Thanks for the input mm. I have a question about this into Jon, as it has been the impression around here that they would, no one has ever said any different from there. So hopefully Jon will clarify for us.

Here were Christen''s (from GOG) exact words to me in case you''re still waiting to hear from GOG.

"Yes we can set the stone, it''s $100.00 per carat so it would be $81.00. We just have to let you know if anything happens to the setting while it''s being worked on we are not responsible, (I don''t expect anything to happen but we just have to say it.)"

I''m actually waiting for them to do a GemEx report on the stone I bought, so I can see it twinkle, and the suspense is killing me! I think I''ve checked my email every 5 minutes since I got to work this morning:) Good luck!

Oh my gosh, I just checked the site and the GemEx report is there... I haven''t looked yet, but the wait is over. Here goes nothing!

Ah, therein may lie the confusion, and I was not clear in my statement either. I was referring to the diamond, should something happen, not the setting. And while none of us would want something to happen to either, the diamond would quite possibly be much harder to replace, and most likely more expensive.

I agree with the other posters that it''s a better idea to have the setting shipped to GOG and have them set the diamond. It would be a bigger loss to have something happen to the stone and not have it covered if set somewhere besides GOG than for something to happen to the setting. It''s pretty rare that a setting will be damaged beyond repair during the setting process.

Aaaah, I''m with you now.

Yep. Just for clarification we fully cover our diamonds that we set into other''s mountings 100%. What we don''t cover (as Christen mentioned) is the workmanship of the setting as we do not guarantee the workmanship of the manufacturers we choose to do business with or the QA of my team before a diamond leaves our store. If we receive a setting and anticipate problems with it we will forward you detailed photography of the setting showing you our concerns and why we approach certain jobs with more caution than others.

Kind regards,
