I have a pair of 8mm white pearl studs, which look great on me. Now I am thinking about getting a pair of faceted ruby studs. Would 8mm cushion ruby studs appear significantly larger than 8mm pearl studs? I don't know if I should go smaller than 8mm, e.g. 7.5mm, 7mm, or 6.5mm.
Cookie - I suggest going to a local store and trying on some studs to see the size you like on yourself. It all depends on your features, the size of your ears, and your preferences. Eight millimeters is eight millimeters, and so the diameters will be the same, but obviously the colors, shapes and light return will be quite different.
8mm in red is pretty big. I have that in a ring, and if they were earrings, they would be pretty showy. Maybe you want a big splash (I like that too! ) in which case they would be perfect.
You can get beryllium treated or lead glass filled on ebay pretty inexpensively though.
If you can afford big rubies (I wish I could! ) they would be spectacular.
If it were me, I'd get the pair at the center bottom of this page http://www.gemfix.com/newest_gems.html and have them made into studs. Then I would get earring jackets similar to these from Costco,
these are particular jackets would be 2 small for the stones I pointed to, you would need a pair of .5 CTW in rubies, which are similar in weight/size to diamonds. But something similar.
Fly Girl -- that's a great idea. I have some 6mm and 6.5mm studs; they look kind of small-ish on me. I should go try 7mm and up, to see how big I could go.
iLander -- the rubies you linked to are luscious. I like big bling's and cost is not a concern, so I want to go as big as possible, while keeping a balanced look.
