Hi Everyone,

I am planning to buy an engagement ring from GOG and have narrowed the setting down to the D''Vatche Royal X Prong or the regular X Prong. I know that Vatche must set the stone, but while reading through hundreds of forum posts about this setting, I noticed that all cleaning/maintenance/etc must be done by Vatche or an authorized Vatche Dealer to keep the warranty intact. I checked their website, but the only dealer listed in Houston is no longer in business, apparently.

Is this going to cause difficulty in the future? I''d really rather not mail the ring off once a year if I can avoid it.

Well, you don''t need Vatche to inspect/clean your ring? I assume that anyone can inspect your ring. If a jeweler notices a problem, then you send it back to Vatche. But you shouldn''t be having problems annually.

It is not required that an authorized D. Vatche dealer conduct all routine maintanance, cleaning, polishing, etc., but rather that only D. Vatche may size, set, or repair the ring in order to maintain the validity of their lifetime warranty. And in my experience, it really is handled by D. Vatche from a common sense perspective... They don''t want your local jeweler sizing the ring because they might use the wrong mixture of solder, etc. or they might ruin the flow of the ring and they don''t want your local jeweler setting the stone in the ring because they might not know how to work with the specific prong configuration. But I doubt they would freak out if you took the ring in to be cleaned and your local jeweler tightened a prong that happened to be loose because that isn''t much different than a mechanic tightening a lug nut - on that note, I feel it important to point out that people shouldn''t attempt to adjust or tighten their own prongs because it''s a skilled art and if done incorrectly you could actually damage your diamond or break off the tip of the prong. I have a deal with my mechanic, he doesn''t work on his jewelry and I don''t work on my car
