Do you think the average person can tell the difference between a .85 carat diamond and a .90 carat diamond? How about a D colour and F colour?

Mounted - no.

In a well cut stone this size D or F color will be VERY difficult to distinguish - especially in a set stone.

It might be easier to tell the color difference in a princess as opposed to a round brilliant, but mounted, it will be very difficult, and might only be possible if you have a D and an F side-by-side.

Regarding the size, depends on the girdle & how deep the stone is. Also, a well cut stone will have greater surface area shine.

So, it depends.

For example if the .90 stone is deep w/ a thick girdle it may appear smaller than the .85 w/ a medium girdle & less depth.

As mentioned, I doubt you will see any dif. in color once set.

In a word, no.

This isn't much of a standard. Most people can't tell the difference between a diamond and a CZ. This may turn out to be a fine reason to buy CZ's (and they sell pretty well for this reason), but this doesn't change the merits of real diamonds.
