I read on another site that you shouldn''t consider a round diamond with more than 61% depth. My new stone has 63% depth. Is this a big problem? The other site says you only gat 30% light return if it''s over 61%. Will my new stone be dull at 63%?

This kind of simplistic... there are quite a few factors involved in 'light return' and depth alone is not enough to get a stone 'doomed'. Can you get a Sarin report? or one of those Ideal Scopes to take a look at the stone? or have it seen by an appraiser to get some description (and or test) of the optics of the stone?

There is no reason in the two numbers you have posted to consider it a 'bad' or a 'good'.

Have you been reading Fred C, the diamond guy's site? Bunch of rubbish there.

That said, the stone is a tad on the deep side. With the right crown & pavillion angles the stone could be nice. The sacrifice of a deeper stone is the smaller mm size. In other words, the diamond will appear smaller than it's carat weight because the weight is in the bottom (not seen). You've got some weight in the girdle as well. Not necessarily bad - just not maximizing carat weight appearance.

If you are having second thoughts & can return the stone, send the stone to an independent appraiser for review.

It's not a bad rule, but you might be eliminating some great stones in the 61.5% range. Shy away from anyone who has hard and fast rules.

I have a hard rule for you:

Run fast!

Sorry to stick my oar in here.

This 61% thing makes me slightly worried. Having agonised over a stone on the internet, I went for one that was D 62%, T53.9%, Crwn 15.9% and Pav 42.5%. It scored 0.9 on HCA, so I thought that was an excellent cut.

Does this mean that my stone will be a bit small looking? Crud. Mind you, I recall it scored a mere "very good" on spread, so I should have noticed that.

I have to say this site is really great - I've learnt so much in the last week.

Thanks

Yes, but it doesn't mean it's not a beautiful stone. 62% is fine. In fact, mine is 62.1%. And, yes, it does effect the mm. In other words, don't worry. Be happy. And, more than likely your stone has a ton of fire.
