YES, depending on what you are looking for. If you are after the best light return, the specimen above has little chance to have great optics, at least by the standards PS keeps in high regard. I would look further for a piece with both better proportions and more info available about it to allow some evaluation of the cut (such as crown and pavilion depth or angle).
Well, 64% is indeed large, but as we have seen, some of those large-tabled stones can be exceptional values (no mark ups) and look incredibly pretty. Just a few days ago we have seen a stone with (I think) 63% table that was a ball of fire. So, it's not ideal, but could still be pretty.
My old stone actually has a 65% table, fairly shallow and should have been a fisheye, but somehow was cut just right so that it wasn't (according to the appraiser, not just wishful thinking). The stone doesn't have the fire of my new ideal cut, but more white light and a lot of fire from the crown instead of the table. Not a bad look, just not as desired as an ideal cut. Different personality.
Larger tabled stones aren't necessarily duds, but 64% table is pretty big. It's good that the depth is less than the table, but the chances are slim that this stone would be a real looker. You'd need to get more information--yanno crown and pav angles to really be able to tell more.
Why the obsession with eBay?? So far every stone except one was a dud....are you looking through other more fruitful avenues as well?
Yep, primarily Dirt Cheap Diamonds, they seem to have the best prices. Although I've found that I can save about $1,000 on eBay for apparently white, eye-clean, 1ct stones. $1,000 is a lotta cabbage.
i am an avid ebayer so i can give my personal insight.
you indeed can pick up great bargains on ebay, no doubt that. but you have to know EXACTLY what you want or you will get ripped off.
when it comes to jewelry, in general, you get what you pay for. you will rarely find great bargains, unlike DVD and MP3 players. a lot has to do with the fact that DeBeers has control and therefore there will be very little price fluctuations. no such exclusivetivity on say a TV set.
that being said, you still might find something pretty for a decent price. you won't find the fireball you would've if you had gone with a vendor who has great items at reasonable prices (like those here on the forum)...but you still might find something okay for what you paid. just don't expect a miracle. won't happen...unless it's stolen or something...which is a whole 'nother story!
good luck with your search!
