6-prong setting for a small diamond?

I''ve been lurking here for a few months (lots of useful info, btw), and I''m in the process of getting an engagement ring for my girlfriend of 10 years.

She is not fond of big rocks. I know for a fact that she''d much prefer a smaller, but good quality diamond. I''m thinking of getting her something around 0.4 - 0.6 carat range, good quality of course. My question is, is it ideal to set this in a Tiffany 6-prong setting? I''ve looked into some old topics on the 6-prong issues in this forum and I''d like some professional opinions on this. I know she really likes the 6-prong setting, so I''m hoping I can get this setting for her. If I can get this setting for that size of a rock, what are some of the things I need to be aware of?

I have a six prong tiffany setting for a .67 solitare and I dont think it is to small of a stone to be put in a setting of this sort. I like six prong better than four prong due to safty reasons if somthing happens to a prong you still have five prongs. Where as if you have four if you lose one you can lose the stone. Good luck

I don''t think six prongs would be too much for that range of diamond sizes, especially since she likes the look of a six prong setting.

Have you guys seen any rings with this size center and a six prong head? If not, both of you should go and look. That way, you will know exactly what to expect.

I don''t know if I should bring my gf with me to look at rings as I want to surprise her out of the blue. I probably will go look around on my own....

My next question is, does the band itself have to have a minimum width to support the 6 prong setting? All the fashion rings she wears are not thick, so I''m guessing she''d prefer a thinner band (and I think that may be a good thing, because it will make the rock look abit bigger if the band is thinner than the rock''s diameter).

I have a .54 carat diamond set in a 6 prong head and it has been fine for 15 years! I imagine a nice 2mm band would look great too and would support the diamond no problem - thin bands do make the stone pop more

First of all, congratulations on your decision to look for an engagement ring for your GF. My boss' wife has a .25 6-prong from Tiffany's - it doesn't take away from her diamond at ALL. So I would readily say that a 6-prong would look great with a .40 - .60 diamond! I would agree with Lorelei, a 2mm is nice and I consider that thin, it would be more than sufficient to support your diamond and head. I hope this helps. If the prongs are small, there could be many and never look obstrusive. Older rings come with 8 - and tiny as these prongs are almost dissapear from view at arm length. On the other side, four prongs seem obstrusive if large. IMO, of course.

I am not sure what you mean by ''Tiffany style'' setting... there are some that look very much like Tiffany''s (LIKE THIS), and six prong basket settings (LIKE THIS) and then some with knife-edge like prongs (LIKE THIS) that have them substantially larger than the others two kinds... Regardless, I''d rather look for a setting with small prongs rather than few.

I''m not an expert, but your scenario sounds just like mine was. I bought my FI a 0.57 ACA from Whiteflash and had them set it in the Vatché Royal Crown setting, which is 6-prong. By all accounts it is fabulous. I was very surprised at how small and delicate the prongs are, they are really not noticeable when you look at the ring.

I''m attaching a pic I took of it. I find that the prongs seem more prominent in the pic than they do in reality. I don''t think you''ll have any problem with a 6-pronger. It''s safer too.
