50 Shades of Grey

I've been trying to read the first book for about two weeks now. I just got to the part where he brings her to meet his family, and after reading that it's modeled after twilight, I can totally see that now.

I have a really difficult time getting past how he treats her/ women. I can see that he is "changing" now, but it disgusts me how much she puts up with it from the beginning. It's her first boyfriend and it makes me sad that she thinks his controlling behavior is ok. That just isn't a love story in my eyes.

I went into this book with no expectations and no knowledge of the book, so his sex life was definitely a surprise for me. At first it was interesting since it was new to me, but I can't help but feel he manipulates her, which is why she agrees to his contract. I just find it creepy.

I'll still try to trek through this first book as I'd like to see how much "better" he gets.

He doesn't really improve until the third book, IMO.

And Madame, LMAO! :appl:

Oh god it's bad.

Really really bad.

Fanfic FAIL.

Erotica FAIL.

BDSM FAIL.

Pretty much sums it up for me as well apart from the fanfic view as I haven't read the Twitlight version.

I've only read the first book as I don't think I could stomach the rest. It was terribly written and disappointing..I was expecting something better with all the hoopla surrounding it.

I found the CG acted out of charater much of the time and I don't believe the author has ever read anything about the BDSM lifestyle or a piece of fiction about it.

I should have read the reviews on Goodreads before buying!

For 50 Shades fans, I highly recommend Diary of a Submissive by Sophie Morgan. I downloaded it yesterday and oh my goodness. I can't wait 'til my husband is back from his business trip. I'm going to burn through a lot of batteries in the meantime.

I read the first 50 shades book lying on the beach in Mexico. Yes it is crap and fluff and the Christian character is so predictable, in fact the book is predictable. I really have no interest in reading the rest of the books in the series.

I remember years ago someone was talking to my mother (a Librarian) about those Quote awful Harlequin Romance novels Unquote (sorry unable to find quote marks on borrowed computer). My mother always took the angle that at least they were reading something and that is a good thing. Maybe they never go on to read other books but maybe they do go on to read better written books. I agree.

Not everyone is going to read Stephen Hawking. At least it is getting people talking about books and maybe someone who NEVER reads books actually picks up a book and reads it. That is a good thing :wink2:

I have read both 50 Shades AND a Brief History of Time, and I think I prefer Hawking.

That being said, I raced through the entire 50 Shades trilogy pretty quickly. It was poorly written but oddly consuming. I had an awareness the entire time that I was engrossed in what I consider to be literary trash (just my opinion, please don't hate me), but I found it oddly magnetic.

But that's just probably because I found them to be mindless, easy fun.

I started 50 Shades and had minimal interest. For that reason, I just haven't picked the book back up again. For me, it was sort of like all of the hub-bub with the movie "Magic Mike". I don't have any interest in seeing that either, but all these woman went ga-ga over it.

This exactly, I enjoyed reading them...

Considering my life is a ball of stress right now, these were a good distraction. However, I agree that the writing is pedestrian at best. I can't comment on the BDSM lifestyle aspects, but am intrigued by the titles suggested on this thread. :naughty:
