Im getting my fiance a 5 stone wedding band.

She has a size 7 finger.

I am deciding btwn .5, .7, 1 ct total on a 5 stone ring.

Does anyone know which size will cover her finger so that you wont see the band if you looked on top of her hand?

Thank you in advance.

Hi gemnewb,

My middle finger is size 6 and I have a 1.25tcw 5-stone right hand ring. The stones cover my finger very nicely. So my guess is the 1tcw will work best for your fiancee if you don''t want to see the band. The setting also plays a part, I set mine pretty low; you can set yours higher if you don''t want the band to be showing.

I think you are going to need at least one carat to cover the top of a size 7 finger without seeing metal.

Thank you...

for making me spend more money =P.

Impossible to calculate...better/easier to check visually.

I'm a size 5, and my 5 stone is 1.65ct...each stone is .33. I can't see any of the band on my ring. If you are wanting to cover a size 7 finger, you should definitely do at least 1ct.

Will this band be matched with another ring, or worn by itself?

Just to give you an idea...

Another suggestion... have you looked in to 7 stone bands? They would give you more finger coverage.

I have a size 7 finger and a 5 stone. I don''t believe a 1ct will cover the total top, more like . 35-.40 whch would bring up the ct weight to 1.95-2.00ct. Consider Orbayas suggestion and look at 7 stones.

elle,

do u happen to have hand shot of your ring?

it would really help me out visually.

thanks.

elle,

i found a pic of ur ring.

how many carats is your wedding band?

my ring size is about 6.25 to 6.5. My ring is, .5, .10, .90, .5, .10. And that covers my finger well. Hope this helps.

how many carats is your wedding band?
2.59ct total.
I could have gone with smaller stones and still had the top coverage. the .35-.40 would have been enough.

thanks.

I''d vote for a 7 stone ring too.

Where are you getting your ring from? a 0.1ct melee has a diameter of ~3 mm. If you do 7 stones, you will have ~ 2cm finger coverage. If you g 0.15 ct (sorry, don''t know how big it is in terms of diameter), you will have bigger finger coverage, and the band is wider. Is the ring going to be worn with an engagement ring? I have a 4 mm white gold ring. I personally think that''s too much ring on one hand, so I wear my engagment ring on my right hand.

I would suggest you have her try some on in real life to get an idea of coverage. You want to cover the finger but avoid the overhang which IMO looks rather strange.

well im kinda skipping the engagement ring and just getting a 5 stone 1ct plat ring for her to wear.

?

I wear a 6.5 and have looked at 5 stone bands. One carat is very nice, but I would go with maybe 1.25 if possible. I opted for a 7 stone. My wedding band has 7 10 pointers and it covers the top of my finger nicely with no metal showing.

I am waiting on a 5 stone (.75 ctw..with 15 pointers) to arrive . Thought it may show up yesterday, it''s been two weeks!
Anyway...it''s a size 6.75 and maybe since it''s bar set, the diamonds are spread out a little furthur, not so close together, resulting in more finger coverage?
There''s a pic in this link:

I suspect it will cover most of the top of my finger..and I will hopefully have it Monday, and will post hand shots for you k?

I''d be more than happy with a 5 stone band as an engagement ring. There are no rules right? A solitaire, 3 stone, 5 stone, diamonds are diamonds, love them in any shape or form! I''m sure she will be VERY happy with whatever you decide ..afterall, its the meaning behind it..I''d wear a twist tie around my finger, if that is what my hubby had proposed with!

Good luck with your search!

I wear a size 6 and I also have a seven stone band of ten pointers and it covers the entire top of my finger.

I wear a 7.25 and have a 5 stone 1cttw. I would need 2 more stones to cover my finger and see no band.

I wear a size 5.5 and I have a .50 tcw 5 stone band and I would need 2 more stones to cover the top of my finger.

This is 40-pointers on a size 7 finger, for reference.

well im kinda skipping the engagement ring and just getting a 5 stone 1ct plat ring for her to wear.

Please make sure she is OK with this first! A lot of girls would be happy to have a 5-stone band as their e-ring, but I think most would rather have a larger center stone, with or without sidestones/finger coverage. I definitely prefer a solitaire, for one!

I didn't think the one receiving the "gift" really had any say? I mean, when I first got engaged, we never discussed rings...I would have felt very superficial and materialistic having said to my husband "I prefer a large center stone"(if we had discussed getting engaged). He was 23, when he proposed, and I had no idea he had been saving $$ from his summer job, then purchasing a ring (which then cost about $3000). I was so proud to wear that ring, knowing how hard he worked to buy it, and what it meant to him (and myself). It was about .65 carats. Now adays it seems women discuss their "wants" before the engagement..why ruin the surprise? Why not let him buy what he wants, when he wants, and what he can AFFORD!! Sure..this is Pricescope, where larger diamonds seem abundant..but it is NOT the norm in the real world! I'm sure the marjority of engaged couples in this world are sporting diamond rings of LESS than one carat in size. So..I am just saying that if I were the man, and I was picking out a gift for my girlfriend, I would be a tad offended if she started telling me what she wanted! I would want to pick out what I like, in my price range..and if that meant a diamond band, or a sapphire ring..etc..I would hope she liked it for the symbolism and meaning of the ring. Not everyone wants a HUGE diamond, not everyone prefers a solitaire, and surely..not every man can afford to purchase one! I am all for the 5 stone band, in place of the solitaire, and I think your fiance will LOVE it, if she really loves you!

Not to start an argument over what seems to be a volatile issue every time it comes up, but I certainly had a lot of say in what my rings looked like. After all, I''m the one wearing them for the rest of my life! My boyfriend at the time gave me full control over the whole process. He suggested a stone; I designed the entire ring through WF. So the engagement ring is not always a surprise, and not always simply the man''s to choose and the woman''s to accept. Different couples do things differently. I know that the majority of couples don''t do what we did, but it never hurts to get an idea of a girl''s style preferences (the old "shopping with a friend" trick works)...especially when the ring he''s planning to give her is unconventional. Perhaps the OP''s girlfriend is someone who wants to be surprised, and perhaps she''s more like me and would rather be able to tell him what she wants. He''ll of course have the best idea of that; anything we say is pure speculation.

Very generally speaking, most e-rings in the real world as well as PS have one larger center stone plus or minus additional stones, be it a 3-stone, 5-stone, pave setting, etc. When the OP asks about 5-stone rings, I think he''s referring to 5 stones of the same size, which is not a typical engagement ring design. Wedding band or anniversary ring, yes, but it''s not a typical e-ring. That''s not to say she won''t love it or be happy with it, but isn''t it much safer to go with what probably >90% of engaged women have?

And with that, I''m releasing my hijack of this thread and guiding it back on topic.

I think I can help here too - I have about a size 7 finger and have been looking at 5 stone rings as well, basically inspired by all the beauties on here (particularly the Kcoursolle and orbaya)! Two days ago, I went to a few jewlery stores to try them on and see how they fit and looked.

In both stores the rings were 1 ctw, size 7, and bar set with little bars between each diamond - i think this would take up a little more room than shared prong (like Beau13''s lovely). While they were lovely, they just barely covered the top of my finger, and i found myself asking how much it would be to add another stone or two to make it cover. It didn''t look bad, and there wasn''t much room/finger showing on either side, but there was a little...i''m picky - i wanted it to almost look like it is/could be eternity style.

The diamonds were 20 pointers and i think in a five stone to make it cover the finger ALL the way, you might need 30 pointers (or maybe 25). It depends on how picky you and she are on coverage - it was still a substantial ring with lots of presence at 1 ct and i am sure she would be thrilled you put so much time and thought into her ring.

To answer your original question - from a lady with a size 7 finger, however less than 1 ctw probably won''t be enough

i wish for smaller fingers all the time!

When you decide, can we see some pics?!?!

Jstarfireb- I get what you''re saying about the solitare but some women, love the look of a 5-stone or eternity band instead of single larger stone. It''s not common, but who cares. To me it says the person''s sure enough about themselves that they don''t need to go with the flow and be traditional.

I''m lucky enough to have both, but find that I wear my 5-stone with my wedding band more so than my e-ring. Hopefully Gemnewbs girlfriend will appreciate how distinct it is and love it.
