Ok, so I found the setting I wanted, thanks to everyone here who helped with that. It is a Gelin Abaci tension setting and the price I got was roughly $1600. The problem now is that the setting requires at least a .5 carat stone and it needs to be at least SI1 for the tension setting. The budget I was working with was $2000 dollars, but my boyfriend has agreed that we can spend up to $3000 or $3200, depending on how much money he can save between now and when he buys the ring. My question is, is it possible to find a suitable diamond for $1500 or less, hopefully less? Size is not a problem, except that it must be at least .5 for the setting. I am worried about color, because the diamond is so open in a tension setting and I would think it is much easier to see if it looks yellow. And I was looking for an ACA, although I suppose that plan will have to go. Where should I go about looking for a .5 carat vs2 H color diamond with this budget? I was looking at whiteflash and goodoldgold but they didn''t seem to have much. Am I not looking in the right places?

Have you called Whiteflash? If I were you, I'd at least give them a call and see what they have that may not be showing up (or maybe they'll be getting more stones in soon). The two ACA stones I have are really gorgeous!

Wink Jones @ winfields has a 0.54 H VS2 for $1488 (Depth 60.9% Table 55% Crown 34.3° Pavilion 40.9° - HCA score of 1.3) its currently not listed on his site, but listed in the Pricescope search.

and he has a 0.56 H VS2 for $1543 (Depth 60.9% Table 56% Crown 34° Pavilion 40.7° - HCA score 0.7)

i can never find any more details on winks site beyond the specs, but it might be worth giving him a call. Both are Hearts and Arrows: Winks List

alternatively theres this 0.54 G SI1 from Whtieflash which might be worth giving them a call and asking if its eye clean. or the one maddiemooker mentioned

the problem is that i need a stone with at least a medium girdle, if not slightly thick, and none of the diamonds i am looking at meet that criteria. is there a bigger database of diamonds than the one on pricescope, or will people at whiteflash or goodoldgold help look for one that will meet my specific needs?

Both vendors will be more than happy to help you if you give them a call. Mark at Engagement Rings Direct is also a great resource for this kind of thing because he is in the diamond district and can literally walk around and find something that meets your criteria. Try calling him too...

sorry for the ten million questions but i have another. i talked to someone at mickeyroof, where i am getting my setting, and i discussed the possibility of buying a diamond from them. would they be as good as any of these other vendors? and, if i choose to go with another stone is that an incredibly rude thing to do? i'm stressing a little bit because the prices i was quoted for certain stones at mickeyroof is a little higher than we want to spend and i think if we have to spend that amount of money we can get a higher quality stone elsewhere. is buying a diamond separate from a setting common practice?

...oops... edited to ask whether you can get a gelin abaci setting from engagement rings direct or if its sort of limited to mickey roof as far as internet vendors go?
