First off, I apologize that this post is so long.

So I went to a few places on Jeweler''s Row in Philadelphia to look for settings for my round diamond. I initially wanted a 6 prong knife edge (Tiffany style) setting, but one jeweler told me I should go with 4, so the 6 prong doesn''t rub against the wedding band. (We haven''t picked out bands yet). Is this something I need to worry about? I would love to hear reasons why people favor 4 prong over 6 or vice versa.

Those of you with knife edge settings, is it hard to find a band that sits well with the ring?

I also like the setting with 2 small baguettes on either side of the diamond, but my stone is an I (faces up white), so do I need to worry about how the color of the baguettes affect the color of my stone? I know the jeweler will probably match the color well, but I''m worried about any color difference showing.

I got some referrals from Chris at AGA, but I can''t help but feel nervous about leaving my stone to be set. I''m getting insurance with Jeweler''s Mutual and they told me as soon as I fax them the paperwork for the mounted stone I''m covered. However, I''m worried about something happening while it''s being set. What are some things that can go wrong when the diamond is being set?

Does anyone have any recommendations for a talented jeweler in Philadelphia? I realize my setting is fairly simple, but I''ve seen some sloppy simple settings in some stores. Just want to make sure I get top quality.

Thanks everyone!

The number of prongs is totally personal preference. I like some rings with both. If you want a Tiffany knife edge replica, you might want to look at Excel since they make a beautiful replica. If you do a search, there are several on here. sna77 is one of the more recent ones who had a stone reset in that setting. Most people put a diamond wedding band with it. If you want to get an idea how bands look, go to Tiffany''s and try on their knife edge ring with wedding bands. sna77''s wife actually got a (huge!)Tiffany diamond band to wear with hers.

As far as the side baguettes go, I also love that look but found it much harder to find a wedding band that looked right with it. (I finally ended up with a 4 prong basket by Leon Mege which is similar to the Cartier solitaire setting even though I love the Tiffany knife edge.)

How close a wedding band sits to a ring really has to do with how the setting is made. I think Tiffany has sold that 6 prong setting for so many years that if it was a problem, they wouldn''t still be selling so many! (I do think the plain tiffany-style settings that are inexpensive do rub more in the 6 prong than the 4 prong, though. So that might have been what the jeweler was referring to.)
