4.5 size finger 5mm wide e-ring too thick?

My BF and I have been shopping around for engagement ring styles and we fell in LOVE with BGD Flora but I had some concerns regarding the 5mm width on my 4.5 finger, coupled with a wedding band, I'm afraid will look too thick or bulky on my hand.

I also wanted to know what some of your experiences are with the twist/criss cross band and how a wedding band would sit against it. Pictures would be great :naughty:

TYA!

It is likely to take up quite a bit of finger real estate, depending on the length of your finger. Some small sized fingers are a bit on the stubby side while others are blessed with apparently never ending looking fingers. I also have a size 4.5 finger which is a bit on the short side so 5 mm is about the maximum band width that feels comfortable to wear.

It does depend on the length of the finger from the base to the knuckle. Sadly, my lower finger is short and the upper part is longer. So it would be hard to wear a 5mm e-ring and 2mm band. But as far as the design goes, I think a thin sparlky diamond wedding band would be really pretty with that ring! I suggest you go and try on some wide rings of any style just to get a feel for how much space you have!

If you have short fingers, choose narrower and flatter band/shank rings. Pay very close attention to where that band or shank bumps against your pinky. If the ring(s) are wide and/or thick and they hit the joint of the pinky, they are going to eventually make that joint very, very sore and you will be buying some less massive ring(s) later. I have short fingers, I loved the look of a thick domed wedding band 6mm wide. And it was an instrument of torture within 6 months. It was too thick and too wide for my short fingers. The rings must hit the fleshy part of your pinky, not that bony joint.

eta: I think that Flora ring would work on even my short little fingers, but I'd get a custom wedding band that's just a thin gold band custom-shaped and cast to hug that ring's shank. I picked the first pic I found on the Internet as an example of the type of band. Even narrower would be better for short fingers.

Of course, if you have long elegant fingers, the world is your oyster, hehe.

Your setting choice is gorgeous! I'm thinking it won't look bad at all because it has two thin twists rather than one wide band.

Like already said, it depends upon the length of your finger. Even if you can't find a similiar style of ring locally, maybe you can try on some rings with the same width to determine if the proportions are how you'd like them.

It depends on the length of your finger.

The band of my e-ring is 4mm wide and my wedding band will be 3mm (don't have a picture of that, but it looks good together). My fingers are kind of short, so I can't wear a wedding band that's very thick without it being uncomfortable. I'll never have one of those stacks with like five rings, lol.

That's a very pretty setting! I think the open shank visually offsets the width a bit. However, the pictures don't show the gallery well. If the wedding ring would not sit flush against the shank of your e-ring (i.e.. if it won't snuggle under the center stone) then you'll need to consider the width of the wedding ring plus the center stone diameter, rather than just the width of the two bands.

I have a size 4.5 finger and I have been wearing a 7mm wide (and also very thick) platinum band for years! I recently got a 2.5mm 6-stone band and I LOVE them together!! It definitely "fills" the lower part of my finger, but it doesn't look crowded, just kind-of dramatic. The pictures don't really show it very well.

So... I think if the rings are comfortable for you, and your finger is long enough to handle it, and YOU like the way it looks... Then GO for it!! :naughty:

Thanks for all of your responses, everyone. I think I will do as suggested and try on a few 5mm bands locally. I'm thinking of a plain 2mm brushed finish for a wedding band but I'm afraid the gaps between the criss-crossing of Flora will annoy me..I'll look into having a custom one made to hug the e-ring but I'd also want to be able to wear the wedding band alone. Eek!

distracts, Dougsgirl: do you find the rings hitting the boney part of your pinky to be bothersome? Or do you just remove your rings when doing things?

I have never noticed it bothering my pinky. I noticed it more when I got my new e-ring (which has a thin, Pave shank) and it feels a little rough and scratchy against my other 2 fingers. But I never felt it with my wide band. I actually really liked having a band with some "weight" to it. And I also don't mind my wedding band (the diamond one in the pics) not sitting flush with my new e-ring. I, personally, think it is kind of a classy, elegant look to have them separate, with a little space between them. I also like being able to wear my new diamond band with my old platinum band (like in the pics) or with my new pave, halo e-ring. When I travel out of the country, I likely will not want to take my flashy e-ring, so I will wear the platinum band and the wedding band together. I would not want a "curved" wedding band.

I think the ring you have in the picture is stunning!!! And if it were ME... I would look into finding a sparkly, pave eternity band to go with it. And I would NOT have them sit flush. But that is just me. :D

I would not hesitate to get a ring in that width, if it looked good on my finger, and if I loved it!

Good luck!!

And if you want to... you can scroll through the pics on this thread and see how my 2 new rings look together and do NOT sit flush. I am actually having a spacer band made to go between them, but they will all be separate.

No. The only time my ring bothers me is if my fiance squeezes my hand, and that happens even when I wear a plain-shank ring. I do usually take mine off if I'm doing a lot of stuff with my hands, but that's because it's three-sided pave and I worry about damaging it or getting it mucked up and having to do extra cleaning (sunscreen in the pave = the worst cleaning nightmare to make the diamonds look sparkly again). If it didn't have diamonds in the shank, I wouldn't worry about it.

If the bottom width, the part that's on the back of your finger, isn't 5mm, I don't think it should be a big deal, if a band would sit flush w/the ring. I have the short n' stubbies-my hand is not that much bigger than my 8 year old daughters. I used to wear a 5mm band w/a 3mm three stone, and they were the same 8mm width in the back and it didn't bother me or cause any problems w/bending my fingers or anything.

I dig that solitaire. It's gorgeous.
