4.46 carat OMC Setting Options and Girdle Questions

I need some expert help.

I plan on wearing the 4.46 OMC every day. The girdle is very thin to slightly thick.

Should I only be looking at bezel settings? Or is it really okay and safe to consider a solitaire?

My OMC has a very thin to very thick girdle and I set it in a four-prong solitaire. I didn't even think about repolishing! I'm super careful with my jewelry, so here's hoping it's never an issue.

THIS!!!! It will eliminate the issue of the thin girdle and allow you to pick a setting you love instead of basing your choice on having to protect the girdle.

I'm on the fence about doing a bezel vs a solitaire and of course I didn't really even think of re-polishing the stone to achieve a thicker girdle on the very thin part--I'll ask JBEG about that.

As far as settings: I "thought" I would just set it into a stock Tiffany setting so I could wear it now (Yay!), then that would give me a bit of time to decide what I really wanted as far as custom. So I spent the day on Monday visiting a few of the upscale jewelry stores. Now why did I think I could simply pop this stone into a setting???? Nope--it has to be custom because of the size, shape and depth of the stone. I am thinking that "maybe" if I bought a round , a stock setting might have been an option--not sure on that. I don't know, it was kind of crazy that no one knew exactly what to do with the stone because of it's size--like they had never seen anything like it. One jeweler had to make a phone call to his bench person and, based on the measurements given, they asked if he was sure it was a diamond. I guess I have to remember that I am in the Midwest, not in NYC or LA. Anyway, I gave up after the third store....

So now that we are onto custom....and I am open to any and all suggestions...but here are my favs:

And I will make a side note: these are my favs but for some reason I am thinking they are all missing a bit of the carving stuff on the side--whatever that is called-- as it makes a modern ring look antique. Does anyone know what I mean? Like the polished smooth sides look so new.

All of the setting options you listed are gorgeous! Here are my thoughts on each:

Julia modified for cushion-I think this is a STUNNING option. The details of the basket and the scrollwork on the shank give it the antique feel.

Julia bezel-this is a great option too because it give you the security of the bezel(what can I say, I am a little partial since I got it ) This option does have a little more of a modern feel because of the bezel, but that can be altered by adding milgraining around the inside of the bezel. Another option I considered when getting this setting was to do engraving on the bezel similar to this setting they made: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.350671951644635.85915.100001054981028&type=3 . It would give it a more vintage feel. However, if having a band fit flush is an important thing for you, then the Julia might not work for you.

Sophie-I love this setting. I think it shows of Antique cushions and OMCs second to none!

Gabbie-this is a unique halo option, but I dont think it is one I would do with this stone. I agree with you, I am not sure how it would look with a cushion instead of a round.

Leon's 3 and 5 stone options-These are gorgeous, but they do stray from the solitaire you originally said you wanted. On the flip side, they will give you some CRAZY awesome finger coverage.

Yes, you can get the girdle fixed so it is not very thin! That is exactly what I would do. If I ever buy an antique stone, it will definitely go for girdle rehab if it has any tiny chips or if it is very thin in areas. I'd want it to be in excellent condition when I set it, and I wouldn't want girdle issues to force me into a style of setting that was not my first choice.

my OEC is v-thin to v-thick and i am just wearing it in a 6 prong open solitaire. 6 gives you more protection than 4 if you don't want to bezel it. you could as others mention get some girdle rehab done on it to make it a bit thicker as well but i wouldn't think you HAVE to bezel.
