Hi there,
New to forum.
I am looking for some advise from anyone who has had third degree burns. My husband burned himself with boiling water on his lower leg to the middle of his foot. We took him to the ER and they bandaged it and cleaned it out(ouch) and gave us some silverdene ointment our issue now is its still very painful, it is building new skin and such but it is still very swollen and "stiff"...We are changing the bandages and such at least twice a day and it does feel better but is still far from healed which we know will take alot of time but we would like to know if anyone has any advise on ongoing care and such so we can keep it in good condition and promote healing..It is very red(new blood and skin appearing) and it does have some appearance of healing ...We just want to see if there is anything else we can do to help it along..It is still very painful...
Thanks

I AM NOT A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL

For a severe burn, the doc should have prescribed a painkiller as well as the cream. He may get some relief from Advil, but I''d go back to the doc and ask for something stronger. It''s ridiculous that a good painkiller wasn''t prescribed immediately.

Also, when I''ve had bad burns, I try to keep moving the muscle/joint, not far enough to damage the new tissue, but enough to keep it from getting too stiff.

Welcome to PS!

Speedy recovery!

Have you been to see your doctor for a follow up, or just the initial ER visit? I would try to get in for a follow up appt (either with your regular dr or a burn specialist, not the ER) as soon as possible, to confirm that it is healing properly and to ask them about further follow up care.

You need to follow up with a physician that is a burn specialist. Pronto.

My boyfriend''s step-brother was deep-frying some venison in his apartment a few months back and ultimately ended up getting 2nd-3rd degree burns throughout most of his body (from his head to his toes). His legs and feet fared out the worst, however

Needless to say, he was in excruciating pain, and it seemed to me that painkillers were his saving grace.

He''s doing a lot better these days, so there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I''m not exactly sure what his treatment entailed as far as after-care is concerned, but next time I talk to him, I''ll try to get some helpful information for both you and your husband.

I hope your hubby starts feeling better soon though..

I had a third degree burn once from boiling water. (note: don''t pour boiling water and read at the same time!) I used fresh aloe gel straight from the plant and these weird water bandages. I think they''re called 2nd skin moist burn pads. I loved how they didn''t stick at all to the burned area. I thought it really helped my skin to grow back and helped ease the pain of it. I did have a... not exactly a scar, but more of a swirl of different colored skin for a couple of years on my thigh, but that''s gone now.

Hope I helped.

I have no advice to give you on burns, but I wanted to say I hope your husband heals well and quickly, Nibsey! So sorry to hear that this happened to him.

I was going to recommend that cream. But I would see a derm who is a burn expert too. I know skin that has been burned has various healing cycles, and I think the skin being very taut is part of it but I am not a doctor. I am sorry. Burns can be very excruciating.

One should never mess around with a third degree burn. Third degree burns can carry a high risk of infection, therefore many patients need to follow up for debridement of the burn sight. This involves scraping the dead tissue which helps prevent infection and reduces the need for a skin graft.

I highly recommend a consultation with a burn specialist...if for no other reason than reassurance that the wound is healing without complication.

Good Luck. Burns are no picnic. I hate to say this, but if it is painful, it''s actually better because it is a sign that the burn didn''t damage the nerve endings. Yet, it is prudent to seek professional follow up .

Please.
