Ok, I am turning the big 3-0 in July!!

I would love a diamond pendant or earring for my bday, but there is no way I am going to let my partner spend money on me like that as we just bought the ering (and went over budget but around 1k).

So, I am thinking of saving up all my birthday, Christmas money etc and buying either earrings or a pendant from WF to celebrate this big occasion (although it may take me a while to save up present money, that''s totally cool with me).

My question''s are:

- I was thinking stud earrings, but I think that I would have to go too high a tcw to look decent for my budget (I wouldn''t want to spend more than $1500? I don''t know, what''s reasonable for this kind of project)

- how big a stone would I need for a pendant, something big enought to look like a decent size, but I don''t want something too big, I was thinking smaller than my ering stone, which is 0.8ct).

- I want an ACA (got one for my ering, hooked, totally not looking back, and girls, they are UPGRADABLE, what more can I say), any opinions on this?

- I love icy white stones, my ering is a D colour, so how low can I go without making it look yellow against my D (didn''t forsee this problem did I now

, how many times have we said here, you are never going to compare it to a D.....)

Ideas, opinions, suggestions most welcome (NO AGE JOKES, I am feeling a bit fragile

Or how about a whiteflash diamonds by the yard??http://www.whiteflash.com/golden-wardrobe/Gold_Details.aspx?ItemCode=7201&CategID=7

ETA: Sorry, just realised I didn't really answer your questions, just threw out random ideas! I guess though I think that everything you asked, the answer would depend on the person. For example, I know I have big ears, big lobes, and given that I also like higher colours and VS clarity for mind clean reasons, it seems unlikely I will ever be able to afford diamond studs to suit the size of my ears. Some people will probably suggest it would be fine to drop down to maybe an H for pendants and earrings, and maybe even to consider some of the ES, but that may not be mind clean for you...anyways, sorry I don't have an answer!

honey what date is your bday?

What about a WF Bezel pendant? I got one for my 25th bday and I don''t think it was that expensive. It has an ACA melee in it. I think at 30 points you could get a certed stone. I love mine and wear it on almost a daily basis.

WF bezel pendant

I was going to suggest a bezel set pendant as well.

Your budget would easily swing a 30-pointer (significant for your 30 years). If you wanted to use most of the $1500 you have in mind, you could get up as far as a .50ish J stone.

is this really my old friend Alj?

Thanks everyone! I will try to answer questions now.

Bling addict - I can save longer, I don''t care if it takes two years even, I just want a either a decent size pendant or earrings. I have been thinking overnight and I am leaning more towards a pendant now! Oh the decisions!! And you are being helpful!! Thanks

AJ - July 22, is your bday in July too?!

Scarlet and Alison - I checked out the pendants, not a huge fan of bezel settings for some reason, but I do the 4 prong basket setting, I like how there is less metal and just shows off the stone. Thankyou for the suggestions though!

I would like a yg chain, but am thinking having white metal prongs, like my ering. Can this be done? I guess the stone would be set in wg and just the chain yg? Would this look funny. It''s just that all my jewellery is yg and I really want the chain yg to fit with my everyday stuff too (and my ering!)

I am worried about the whole colour thing you know. Bugger my ering colour being a D (

did I actually just say that>!). I am concerned that if I go to a H, it will be really noticable. I was hoping G SI1 maybe, eyeclean, just have to sort the size out I guess. Do you think 0.5ct is big enough for a pendant.

Ohh, this is hard to pick but very exciting at the same time. I didn''t think I would be shopping for another ACA so soon !!!!!!

I know it could be ages until I get the money for it, I am really insistent that I just save my birthday and Christmas money, so it really could be a while, but I just can''t bring myself to let my dear baby spend anymore $$$ on me (although I am pretty sure I still have some pull with the ole puppy dog face

Hi, DF. Nice to see you back around these parts.

Hi Honey. Hello from a fellow aussie!
35.gif

I too have a significant birthday to celebrate later this year, and have started to think about what pressie to get. Thinking may be WF ACA earrings in martini setting. hehee, so i''d say, go for the ACA studs!
30.gif

I''m wondering about what happens with upgrading stones and having to import the upgrade into Aust though. Do you know if GST and import duties would have to be paid on the full "VALUE" of the new upgraded item, or are the taxes only payable on the difference between the pre-upgrade item and the upgrade? (I mean, if the 16%+ is charged on the entire value, that would make upgrading awfully expensive!!)

AJ - July 22, is your bday in July too?!

lol, yes July 27!! Are you also a Leo, or did you miss out?

btw, have you decided where to stay here?

Hi sparkiles - i am keen to answer you Q as I am facing exactly the same thing at the moment - Honey, hopefully you don''t mind the slight threadjack to help a fellow Aussie..?

For a definate answer, I would call your local Customs office - you may get the run around, I have! Not very clued in people - but anyway..
Going on what I have learnt, you will only pay the GST and duty on your cost of your upgrade. For example, If your new stone costs $10,000, and you''re trading in a stone worth $4000, you will only pay the tax on the "difference" of $6000. This will of course depend on how your vendor invoices - in my situation, GOG told me the invoice would be as above - for example:

Stone B - $10,000
Trade in Stone A - $4000
Total cost =
$6000.

Also, I''m not sure where you got 16% from? From my understanding, you pay 5% duty and 10% gst plus some nominal import fees. (its a lil complex though, if oyu''d like more info I''m happy to explain).

sorry Honey22 !!

Thanks arjunajane, it''s great to know it''s possible to only pay tax on the difference. And I did see your post in the import tax thread, thanks for all that great info!

(and sorry Honey for the off-topic!)

Honey, if you''re keen to get something in the colourless range for a pendant, how about go a little bit smaller on the stone, and have it set in a halo? (I have a halo pendant with a .3 RB, and it''s a good substantial size)
