3 Stone E-ring advice

I''m planning to purchase a 3 stone platinum e-ring w/ a .75 ct marquise center stone w/ pear side stones.

My question is what size side stones would look appropriate w/ a .75 ct marquise center stone?

Also what is the "general" opinion on a marquise center stone w/ trillion side stones.

Finally, any additional tips/sugesstions on internet vendors would be appreciated.

I believe that .25cts on either side should be fine. I was once told it's a 1/3rd rule that works the best, where if the center =1, the sides would be 1/3 the carat weight to be in nice proportion.

Also, I suggest the pears have the rounded edges towards the center and point outward. Not a fan of marquis with trillion sides as I feel it makes the ring too pointy.

Marquis can be long and elegant, and I have seen the oval and pear shaped sides give it a nice rounded look, to extend ACROSS the finger, to couteract the marquis extending the HEIGHT of the finger.

Can't find examples yet, but when I do I'll try to post them! Good luck and sounds like a lovely ring will be coming!!!

Honestly, I think it's a matter of taste.

WRT to pears vs. trillions as side stones, I also agree with Nicrez that trillions makes the whole design look too pointy. JMHO, so pls take it with a grain of salt.

Now with that all of that said, I took a liberty of playing with the diamond proportions to see what different proportions look like next to the center stone. You can find the tool on adiamondisforever.com.

Here's the first.
0.75ct MQ and 0.5ct Pears.

This way of comparison is not going to work, so I'm going to see if I can do a side by side comparison.

Center stone: 0.75ct MQ -- sidestones:
top left: 0.50ct Pears
top right: 0.25ct Pears
bottom left: 0.20ct Pears
bottom right: 0.33ct Pears.

I don't know about you, but I don't see a huge huge difference in proportions.

Well, Kat is right, I suppose because a marquis is thinner, it could absolutely look good with .5cts on the side. Also, I think the BEST thing to do is see these stone LOOSE side by side and play with the sizes. (by the way Kat, I LOOVE your icon!)

I had a person at a counter next to me do this during my search and I helped him pick a nice size, which was incidentally for a .75 oval stone. He got .45 oval sides...

I'm leaning towards the smaller side of the scale .2/.3, I feel the larger stones tend to "compete" too much w/ the center stone.

.75 cts marq is a rather large stone - given the length. The ring below has a small (0.55cts) center, so that the three stones were supposed to work together as the piece of a mosaic (as opposed to using the sides to emphasize the center stone)... Just one more idea, of course. Not too bad.

Ana brought to mind an interesting fact, what will the marquis be shaped like? Like the ones above, long and thin, or more ovalesque? That may also be important as to what sidestone would look nice.

Honestly, the trillions on the side of a fat marquis DO NOT look bad!!!

One may also want to take into account that the shape and size of these fancy cuts varries allot for a given weight due to the parameters of the cut. No idea what such parameters the model at adiamondisforever.com assumes. The band width used in that model should be 7mm or so - considered relative to what one might expect those stones to be like. It is much more likely to find 3mm bands on e-rings (or about half) since the stones are not supposed to look small compared to the band.

Oh well... it would be much better to have a center stone already selected when talking about sides. I am not a big fan of matching sides online - there are too many parameters to consider - bets left to the jeweler. I suppose that any jewelry shop worth it's salt will offer a choice of sides so one can decide what works best.

BTW. The picture is not of my making... this was an acual ring (0.55 F-VS2 marq and 0.5 total trillions).
