I am between 3 ovals:
The first is by far the most well cut but the problem is it is I color. FF thinks Is look cheap and found it yellow looking. Stats on #1:
2.38, I SI1 10.52 x 7.54 x 4.55
depth: 60.3%, table 59%
This oval had basically NO bowtie

and was very lively. The first loose oval I''ve seen without a bowtie...but the color is an issue.

#2: 2.32, F, SI2. The inclusions are a needle which sort of looks like a little scrape somehow- only can see if you look really hard.
10.44 x 7.92 x 4.51
Depth: 56.9%, table 60^

#3: 2.39, E, SI2. One small feather in the middle- doesn''t affect brilliance or bother me
10.73 x 7.81 x 4.39
Depth: 56.2, table 56%

#3 is about $2500 more than #2, which is also about $2500 more than #1. I thought #1 (the I) had the best cut and fire...but FF doesn''t like the I. The I is from one jeweler, #2 and #3 are from the same jeweler. #3 was a bit thinner. We took them outside yesterday on a very sunny day and #2 and #3 had PLENTY of sparkle and great color. I once took an oval H into the sun and it looked more yellow, so this is a good test for me.

THOUGHTS???

Firstly, what are the grading reports for these stones, are they GIA or other?

This is a tricky one, it doesn't sound as if you are overly enamoured of the second two diamonds, you like the cut and performance of the first, but the colour isn't acceptable....You are in a good position being able to see these diamonds in person, as ovals like all fancy shapes can't be evaluated properly by the numbers. What I would do is to keep looking until you find a diamond you love, this is too important a purchase to settle!

Have you considered buying online, and where are you located roughly? The reason I ask is because there might be a vendor not too far from you where you could see some diamonds in person.

Edited to mention: they are all GIA

I am not- but it is so hard to find ovals from 2.25 - 2.7 or so, that are D, E, F and SI and the right length/width! We have looked at at least 12 or so stones. I live in Manhattan so buying online is not an option- we can see everything here and FF does not like the idea of buying online. The stones from one jeweler I actually found on blue nile for about $3k less. Two recommended upstairs 47th street jewelers did not even have any stones with these parameters, so I feel a bit of pressure to choose soemthing

I do understand, but I am sure you can find something that makes your heart sing, a gorgeous oval is a beautiful choice!

Ok - how about contacting Mark at www.engagementringsdirect.com ? He is on 47th Street in the DD and has an excellent eye for a fancy shape, you could contact him, let him know what you are looking for, and then get an appointment and he could have some suitable diamonds ready for you to see.

Alternatively, you could try Jon at www.goodoldgold.com he is on Long Island - I think they might be closed next week, but I am not sure.

We actually did see some ovals Mark had....nothing we liked unfortunately.

Thats a shame, well...try GOG if you like the idea, but if not, then keep looking - it can sometimes take a while to find what you want especially with a fancy shape which can have so many variations.

Thanks for the help! It seems liek I have to either accept the bit of a bowtie, or move down to a 2-2.05 carat. It is easy to find ovals in that size range. Mark T told me ovals between 2.2-3 is a ''dead zone''...but they really look MUCH larger. FF wants me to choose either the E or F stone....I will leave it up to him. He would have picked a round solitare, and I feel guilty about steering this process.
