Hey DF. Happy holidays.

The Ideal-scope image was not any part of the reason that Brian kept this diamond from being sold as an ACA. Remember that to be an ACA every aspect must be Ideal, and the H&A patterning must meet his specific grading standards.

When Brian said it was 'between' a normal Expert Selection diamond and an ACA, he was indicating to you that it slightly missed something on his checklist. For instance: The hearts patterning may not have conformed exactly to his specifications or perhaps the sym or polish would have received EX and not Ideal if sent to the AGS. Since he sent it to the GIA for grading I will hazard a guess that in this particular case the hearts were slightly outside his particular paradigms.

As for cutting style: The brillianteering of this diamond follows Brian's design for New Line, meaning that if it had passed all items on his checklist to be branded it would have been a New Line ACA. As it stands, it's an Expert Selection diamond that 'just missed' ACA status (and therefore missed the premium).

yes, Brian said... the hearts just miss being ACA. about the IS photo.... it seems like there isn''t enough leakage on the edge to be an "OLD" line but,too much to be the NEW line?

Very astute DF. The diamond does have a slight tilt toward 6:00 in this photo, which may have resulted in the areas you''re seeing. Or, it''s possible that the angles of the adjacent main crown to UGF are slightly different there. I could tell you with the full sarin scan if it vexes you, but either way none of this is significant enough to have any visible impact on the diamond.

Along these lines, I have some articles I''ve done in our Knowledge Base you and your friend might like to check out, but I won''t link them in public (all of the vendors avoid linking their own sites to avoid the appearance of self-promo). PM me if you want them.

Back to the egg-nog!
