3.75 Emerald Cut - Advice Needed- VIDEO FROM LEON MEGE

Can I please trouble you guys for your expert opinion on this EC for my upgrade?

Perry Chen from Leon Mege sourced this EC and shot the video. I think I'm in love, but it was my first day looking for EC and I don't know what to look for at all.......

Wow! I think I am in love, too! That Perry is GOOD!

Oh, and I VS1...perfect!!!

(I would have the "very thin" part of the girdle checked and consider having it fixed if possible before setting if needed.)

I am no expert but the very thin girdle would concern me a bit (depending on its location and how the stone will be set).

I was told that a diamond cutter might be able to work on a very thin girdle and make it less thin. Ask someone like Brian Gavin. I saw that they recently recut a radiant into a cushion!

Oh no! Where can the girdle be thin that it wouldn't be an issue?

So very thin to medium girdle is always a no no? Is this a deal killer? Do I need to ask an appraiser?

Very thin, very thick....extremes are a no. Except, you have to know is it just a spot that is very thin or a significant amount of the girdle. More than likely it's a small amount. But I would want that assessed and then have a cutter look at it to see if it could be fixed.

I guess I'm the exception...I dont care for the perry. The steps look too wide and there is a lot of dark showing through. It looks
somewhat nice in the video but I would ask them to re-do the video so you get a whole view of the front instead of the stone
starting in the front and turning where you spend most of the time looking at the back of the stone. I would want a full non-stop
view of the front from side-to-side.

I agree with tyty333. I do see a lot of black in the photos and am a little nervous about the girdle. If you are setting the stone in a bezel I'm sure it would be fine but otherwise it might be a problem. I don't know enough about EC's to glean much information from the numbers but I would suggest looking around a little more so you can get a good idea about what you like in a Emerald cut and what you don't.

All the being said that is one honking diamond and i could only dream of owning something so beautiful and huge :head in clouds:

Where do you see the dark? Just wondering if it's the picture, background, etc. so I can investigate further. Thanks!

Thanks you for your reply. I'm not setting in a bezel. I have asked Perry about the thinness of the girdle, and will report back.

I did see three EC's yesterday, and this one tugged at my heart the most. This one was definitely the whitest I, the spreadiest, and really lovely and symmetrical with a surprising amount of sparkle to my amateur eyes.

That being said, I know nothing about EC's, so I don't know if I should go with my heart or keep looking......

Now you are out of my league...I dont think they have to be the same size but I do think they are more attractive when they
are more uniform. They seem large to me in this stone but maybe thats because its a large stone??? You see a lot of black not
only on the black background photos but also when its sitting in his hand.

It would be nice if we could get some input from Karl (step cut expert) but I think its a conflict of interest for him unless
we have specific questions about what the steps should look like.

I can assure that that dark area does not exist IRL. That is just a reflection of my hand.

The stone is gorgeous in person!

I wonder if any step cut experts will be online soon......I do wonder about your steps being too large input. I'd be interested to know because I never know what to look for in step cuts.

If there is anyway you can get an ASET on this stone I would ask for one. I have bought fancy cuts (albeit it was an Oval with proportions that was very close to guide as being ideal) without an ASET and it was lifeless - i returned I wholeheartedly believe in ASET for fancy shapes becuase of this reason. If you can buy it loose inspect it and take it to other shops that have loose diamonds for comparison then that could be an option, otherwise for a large investment I would wait to see it first hand before setting it or an ASET to confirm the performance of the diamond.


ETA: nevermind, I just realized you have seen this IRL... so your eyes will trump my opinion in the ASET in this matter, however I still think you should look at a few ECs and compare them side by side..

Thanks! I looked at it in all different lighting conditions. And I compared them to three other EC's. It was by far the whitest EC and the brightest.

it might be the angle of the photo? if you have seen it in person and it speaks to you, then I would go for it. Or if you feel more comfortable pursuing other options...then do that.

Whats Leons return policy? On a stone that big Id get it sent to me loose and inspect it at home with an aset scope and my own lighting. Id also have the girdle inspected by a 3rd party. If its all good send it back for a ring. If its bad send it back and have him get a new one. The shipping costs realative to the stone price will be negligable and well worth the peace of mind.

I think if you saw it along with 3 others and loved it, then that is terrific!!! I think it looks beautiful in the new video! Really, it would be hard to choose without seeing some in person, but since you did, go for it if you loved it!

Are you 100% sure that you want an emerald cut diamond? I know you've looked at different shapes but when you're looking to buy that large of a diamond with that price tag, you've got to be as certain as possible that it is exactly what you want. If you go to Tiffany's or Graff's or whatever and try on an emerald cut, does it sing to you more than a cushion or a round or even a princess cut stone? They are all so different visually and I would really try to peg my shape first - then particulars about certain stones.

As for this particular stone, it looks lovely in the video but I can offer nothing in terms of analysis in an emerald cut diamond. From the larger ones I've seen, they offer that big flash of light but not so much in the twinkling department. They are very elegant though and if it's the cut you really want, you might have found a winner here. I would certainly want the ability to take it to an independent appraiser before it was absolutely considered mine with no possibility of return. The fancies can be more difficult to analyze and I would want an unbiased person to have a look see first. Just my .02!
