A friend of mine and her boyfriend are starting to look at rings. I have encouraged her to join PS and have passed on some information learned from the wonderful posters here. She is looking in B&M to get an idea of what she likes before she searches the PS recommended online vendors. Today, a salesperson told her about a GIA diamond that has a 2005 grading report. She told me the depth and table, but didn''t have the crown and pavilion angles because the old reports don''t have them. Should this diamond have been regraded? Is it odd that a diamond graded in 2005 is still on the market?

a 2005 stone might have the angles online www.gia.edu/reportcheck

A Sarin report is a way to obtain these figures in case they are not with the GIA website, also it depends - a 2005 grading report isn''t that old in the scheme of things, sometimes diamonds take a while to find a home, I assume it is a round diamond?

Lorelei, yes the diamond is a round diamond. I made a mistake, the report is from 2004. The salesman told her if the stone was regraded today, the grades would probably go up...does that make sense?

Well if they are so confident about it grading higher they can always send it back to get it regraded, and have it laser inscribed so it is easier to identify in the future for your friend. They should only need to pay 75% of the grading service since its from 2004.
