It is almost 2 years since I first posted on PS to ask advise on sourcing a new setting for my diamond.......how fast time goes ...........

I investigated having my stone set into another setting but US vendors were not very keen on making the setting without exact measurements and/or diamond present and UK vendors were only willing to set if they made the setting (at twice the cost) and on the inclusion that they would not accept liability if anything happened to the diamond.

SO IT WAS BANISHED TO THE CUPBOARD FOR 2 YEARS .................. until I've had an early spring clean and found it again.

This poor ring sits in its box in the cupboard forgotten about as I'm too scared to wear it in case I loose it (thats another story but I have lost an old 1ct european cut diamond from its setting whilst wearing it!).
I think this may sound silly but I have never bonded with it. It has no sentimental value to me as I was given it around 10 years ago from an ex boyfriend. I am now married and wear my ER all the time.
I have no information about the stone except it is 3.74ct and a genuine diamond and is set in 18ct yellow gold. As to cut, clarity etc I've no idea.
I could take it to a jeweller but to be honest they could tell me anything and I'd be none the wiser. So,I have decided to set myself the task of trying to educate myself in the 4 c's and what better place to come than here where there is a wealth of experience.

So far all is not good. I have rated it anything from an I1 to a VS depending on how I look at it. I can be critical and rate it low or I can look at its sparkle and think it must be the best ever! Do I see feathers and clouds or is it reflections from around me? Is it a D because I can see clearly or is it a K because Im wearing yellow? Not as easy as it looks this grading system.

Do I continue to research in my satirical way or do I just banish it back to the cupboard to spend the rest of its days......or for at least another 2 years?

How do you all gain your confidence and experience in knowing what you are talking about? In fact where do I start.................

First thing I'd do is ship it to GIA for a full grading report.

3.74 ct is a lot of diamond to not be sure of what you've got.

An appraiser can tell you too, but if you ever want to sell it a GIA report will hold more weight than any appraisal.
(Note, GIA does not suggest a value.)

I did think of that but am in the UK and as far as I know we do not have a GIA assessment centre. Also I read that GIA only assess loose stones and this is in a setting. Not sure I would be able to take it out.
I can take it to independant jewellers but they are judging it on an insurance replacement value and would give it a ridiculous highly inflated value anyway. I dont have it insured and have no idea of its value. Im more interested in trying to relate it to the gorgeous diamonds I see on here in terms of cut, clarity etc.

I stupidly though it would be an easy project. Hats off to you all with the upmost respect :-))

You may want to contact Neil (denverappraiser) as I know he has an appraiser friend in Scotland (I think he mentioned Perth?), so you might consider sending the ring to him to at least give yourself a starting point with regard to colour, clarity, etc. If his work is anything like Neil's, you'll get a very thorough report with a reasonable (i.e., non-inflated) valuation. Then you can consider sending it to GIA once you know a little more about the stone.

Or you could just send it straight to me -- how does £1000 sound? ;)

Wowzers! That's a nice size sparkler!

I don't think it's silly you haven't bonded with the stone considering its history. But I will say it's not the stone's fault things didn't work out with your ex - it's just the "child" that got stuck in the middle of the separation - and it deserves some lovin

For starters, to feel loved it needs:
1. A birth certificate (GIA/AGS)
2. A baby book - lots of pics for us to see hint, hint
3. To be given attention (worn and showed off from time to time)- just say it's a family ring, or something to that effect, if people ask

Hi Sharon....thanks for the info .

Not sure whether to send diamond to them or put myself on the graduate course :appl:

I like your way of thinking Snicklefritz but maybe I need to work backwards on it

3. To be given attention (worn and showed off from time to time)- just say it's a family ring, or something to that effect, if people ask............. the last time I wore it was 3 years ago to a christmas party and I have always had loads of comments on it when I have worn it.

2. A baby book - lots of pics for us to see hint, hint......... you would not believe how rubbish I am at taking photos. I did manage to upload one when I posted 2 years ago but its not the best. Not sure how to get a link

1. A birth certificate (GIA/AGS)............... maybe it is time this baby was newly born ( from the infamous film.......'' nobody puts baby in the cupboard'' )

Lainie,

Here's your original post with photo (I just clicked the link by your name for all your posts and found the original one):

https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/please-can-you-help-to-recommend-a-setting.138194/#post-135557#p135557

Definitely need more photos!

And definitely get that baby a "birth certificate", or at least an appraisal, so you'll know what you have!

Thanks so much for the link Liz........ that probably is the best photo I took! I have looked at others I took at the same time and they are awful. It looks like the stone is full of feathers but they are not there really so it must be my camera or me
Will try to post them and you will see what I mean.

quite a stone!

Try contacting Gem-A (Gemmological Association of Great Britain) - they have a desk for accepting stones for GIA... as in they organise shipping them there and back again in a package. Not sure if they only accept from trade or not though.

It's usual for the owner to bear the risks of having a stone set - it's not economical for a jeweller to do so. You can get insurance for loose stones with T H March in the UK. They are jewellery specialists both for trade and personal insurance.

If you let me know what area of the UK you are in I can recommend some good independent appraisers.

The obvious choice would be Adrian Smith FGA (http://www.adrian-smith.co.uk/)

HI:

Are you wanting to wear it, or sell it? That might make a difference as to how you approach your appraisal. If it is the latter, then I definately recommend certifying: might make it more marketable/add value. Diamond prices have increased greatly in the last few year, while your ring was "asleep".

cheers--Sharon

I think this has changed recently -- they said they won't insure my stone until it's set. :((

Thank you.........I know its not perfect but it is bright and sparkles like mad. Trying to upload photos but again my camera skills are abysmal  It looks like its full of cloud/feathers but in reality it is pretty clear to the eye unless closely scrutinised.

There's a tutorial somewhere on how to take good photos. Maybe one of the girls can link it for you but really honey, we would love to see any picture you have - non-existent feathers and all.

Your old post asked for reset options. Maybe now's the time to unset that stone and have it appraised. You can't really learn about your stone without comparators around. If you want to do it yourself, maybe bring it to a nice jewelry store and compare its color with the ones they have. I'd get it appraised anyway.

Whether they give you an inflated value or not, they can give you the approximate color and clarity and angles. Then, you can check to see how it compares to say, the holloway proportions. Or, you could buy a cheap Aset scope online and see how your stone performs there. It'd give you a better sense of your stone since you seem to want to get to know it better.

By the way, does your ex have anymore 3 plus carat stones he'd like to give away?? Lol.

Thanks for the info Pandora. I have looked at Adrian but he is based in Scotland and likes direct contact or through stores in Scotland. I am in the Warwickshire area of the UK so not really too far from Birmingham jeweller quarter. Have never been there though so not sure if this would be a starting point. If you know of any good appraisers I would be grateful. I dont mind if the diamond has to be taken out of the setting.
As for an ex with a spare 3+ ct ring.................... believe me when I say I paid for that ring 10 times over :((

Will ask a few people and see if they know a good appraiser in the area.

Quite the stone! I agree with the others, you need to get this baby appraised and then get a GIA or AGS report. You will need this to insure the stone anyway. As for trying to determine it's color and clarity and cut on your own...it's a very very difficult thing to do. Even jewelers and appraisers who have been trained and have years of experience can be off by color and clarity grades, and they are using a masterset of stones for comparison, and have had tons of experience using a loupe and learning what to look for. You could probably tell if it was closer to an I1 or IF, or if it was closer to D than K , but when it comes to determining SI1 or VS2....or G or H, you could never do that with certainy. The stone could be sent to GIA two different times and get two different gradings. So, if those clasifications are important to you, then you must get it graded by a professional.

I can't wait to see what you decide to do with it. It's going to be on blingy beautiful ring I'm sure. I'm also a believer that stones over 3 ct should be named. So while your getting your baby book together and locating the birth certificate, you should be considering baby names too! :P

Thank you Christina............... I agree that I need to get it appraised as I will never be able to work it out myself. I am chasing my tail though. Most Uk jewellers only do valuations. I have trailed the web for the past 2 days and cannot find a jeweller in the Uk who will send it to the GIA or AGS to be certified. I have trawled through the Birmingham jewellery quarter and the one in London and all only offer own in house for valuation. I have however, found this:

http://www.anchorcert.co.uk/

It is part of the Birmingham Assay office and states on there ''The largest diamond certification service in the UK —a department of The Birmingham Assay Office (founded by an act of parliament in 1773)''

Do you think it would be a starting point to send it and get some idea about it? They will take it loose or in its setting. I don't know how it would compare to GIA standards but I would be further forward than I am now

And I have a new favororite bling site thanks to you.........Erica Grace :appl: I could drool all day

Just out of interest ... do you all name your diamonds and if so what are they called ??

Gem-A that Pandora recommended does have a take-in for GIA. Their website says to contact Alan Clark at Gem-A on 020 7404 3334 or [email protected]. Alternatively, I think you could send it to GIA yourself (although this may be more expensive).

Thanks Jaebond.......... I have looked at Gem-A and sent an email to Alan making an enquiry as web site states for trade only or members. Hopefully he will be able to advise of who in the trade could send it on to Gem-A for me id I am unable to send it to him myself.

It seems to me as if there is not as much information available in the Uk as other countries. Or it could be that I am looking in the wrong places. In jewellery stores here you have to take their word that the diamond is a good quality as there seems to be very little information about the actual diamond you purchase. Online UK sellers are now providing more information as to 4 c's but any further info is not available.

Still trying to improve my photography skills. Am playing at cropping to try and get a clearer picture. These were taken several years ago but focus is still poor :!:
