hi i'm fairly new to this forum, thanks for all the knowledge that everyone shares. just wondering,i have an engagement ring - 1.5 G, SI1 and then the hubby gave me another one as a wedding present - 3.02 E VVS1 asscher/square emerald. both are from brand stores and are GIA cert that do not have trade policies, how would i go about trying to trade both of my rings for a 4-5 ct EC/cushion/asscher, preferably 5 ct H VS1 or better? does this seem to be a reasonable trade and if i do have to pay more, does any one have a guestimate of how much I would have t0 pay? i got DSS after finding this site!! thanks

Um. 1.5 carats depending on specs can cost anywhere from about 6k to upwards of 10k.

A 3.02 E VVS1 will be about 70k.

These are probably about what he paid for them.

A 5 carat stone will be more like...100k and up, depending on specs.

And I'm a diamond newb. So take that with a grain of salt. All the info from above is from the Pricescope your diamond thing at the top.

thanks Freke! i love diamonds but have no clue about dealing with jewelers and what not. I guess i would go down in the color and clarity even more so not to spend too much more if i even have to, but when i go to those mall stores, the first thing i hear is that the quality of the diamond is more important that the size. i would like to deal with internet sellers to save money but does anyone know sites that do trades or would take diamonds that weren''t purchased from their site?

I''d try Pearlman''s they are a PS vendor. I''d call and ask for Bill. He''s a great guy to work with.

Good luck.

Thanks Kaleigh, i''ll def give them a call. hopefully i''ll be able to work something out :)

i agree with trying pearlmans. they do take trades/consignment and since your stones have certs that will be helpful. i hope they can work something out for you.

In your first post, you mentioned that both of your rings are from brand stores, but they aren''t from the same brand store, right? If they are, then I would go back to the B&M where you bought them and find out what their trade-in policy is. If they aren''t from the same B&M, then you''re probably better off contacting Pearlman''s. Or maybe even going back to the store where you bought the 3-carat ring and find out if they might possibly buy back that stone AND the 1.5 carat stone so long as an upgrade is involved. That might not be the best solution, but it might be worth a shot just to see how it would compare to what Pearlman''s would offer.

thanks mrssalvo and new england lady, my 1.5 (i forgot to mention a RB) is a debeer''s and the 3, i think is from fortuneoff. my hubby bought both on his own and surprised me so i didnt have any input on either and he fell into the name game the first time and then into the color and clarity more than the size the second time and i''m pretty sure there''s no exchange policy after a certain amount of time. i went to a jeweler at a local mall who told me not to go down on the color and clarity esp for the kind of shapes that i want and then told me that my 3 ct won''t be valued at the price that was payed for because it is an asscher and the resell value is less than if i were to trade a RB. is this true?
thanks again all for helping me out. I hate DSS!!

Absolutely go to the store where the 3 carat stone was purchased and try to work out a trade there. Was it very recently? If it was, try to return it! But I doubt you''ll be able to get in the 5 carat range with a trade without putting a lot more towards the price. You''re going to lose money big time if you trade anywhere else, I bet. Asschers and cushions face up smaller than a round because they are often deeper. So a 3 ct. round will usually have a larger appearance than a 3 carat asscher or cushion. Therefore, the round will often cost more.

An example:

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/3598/ 2 ct. F VS1 asscher, 7.05mm diameter, $25,000 (this stone is smaller than my 1.6 ct. round at 7.6mm!)

http://www.whiteflash.com/round_ideal_cut/Round-Ideal-Cut-cut-diamond-70075.htm 2 ct. G VS1 round, 8.10 mm, $27931 (w/discounts)

So you have a drop in color but the round of the same weight still costs more and is significantly larger. I wish your sweet hubby had known about PS because we surely would have steered him to vendors with upgrade policies.

If you have the cert on your three carat stone, you can compare the size with this 3 ct. ideal round at 9.4 mm:

thanks diamondseeker, the rings are a little more than 2 years old, i was shell shocked when i got the rings and was and am still a lay person when it comes to diamonds so i loved them and thought they were both beauties and never thought that i would even consider changing them until i found this site while i was looking for a sapphire piece as a wedding present for my sister, i wish the hubby had found this site a couple of years ago! oh well. so know that i have DSS i have been obsessing about trading the both of them for a bigger one. anyway, sorry about the rant- i went to the store where the 3 was bought and asked about the trade and it''s a definite no, so then i went to a jeweler who said he would see what he could try to find but he wanted copies of the certs of my diamonds and then told me that i would have to probably pay around 20- 30 k because asscher cuts are "out" so it won''t resell high ,(like what the other jeweler told me). i guess i will try to get the DSS out of my head and just gingerly call Pearlman''s because i don''t want to spend that much money but if the right stone and the right price will come along, then i''ll bite. thanks again for the help!!

I think your asscher sounds fantastic! Very seriously, have you considered having it set in a halo setting? I just love asschers in halos because you have the deep tranquil look of the asscher surrounded by a thin halo of sparkle.

Look at Leon Mege''s site and Maytal Hannah''s, both master ring designers. I''m betting you can increase the size of that asscher for MUCH less than you can pay to trade to get a 5 ct. stone.

Thank you again diamondseeker, i really like the look of the Leon Mege r960 but i also really love the simple solitaire (my current setting). i do think that if i had my asscher put in a halo,it would help with my DSS and i love the antique look that halos give.

any ideas about what i can do with the RB to look bigger? i wear it on my right hand so i am a little concerned that if i put the asscher in a halo and wear it on my left hand with my WB it will look more like a RH ring and would make the RB on my right hand look like my rings are on the wrong hands - sorry if i''m confusing everyone!

I guess that''s not such a bad position to be in. I would definately suggest going back to the store you purchased it from. They will be more willing to give you more for it and they are going to do what it takes to retain you as a customer. They will also take in the RB as those are fast sellers for any jewelry store. Investing into a 5ct is a much larger investment than both of these stones combined. Wish you the best of luck.
