Hello all, I have narrowed my search down (for now) to 2 very similar diamonds at almost the same price. Please give me your opinion as to which one you would choose and why.

Option 1:

Shape Round Ideal Cut
Carat 0.800
Color G
Clarity VS2
Measurements 6.04-5.97X3.68
Table % 57
Depth % 61.20
Polish Excellent
Symmetry Excellent
Girdle TN-
Culet None
Fluorescence Negligible
Certificate EGL
Price $2 740.00

Option #2
Shape Round Ideal Cut
Carat 0.830
Color H
Clarity VS1
Measurements 6.11-6.05X3.73
Table % 56
Depth % 61.30
Polish Excellent
Symmetry Excellent
Girdle TN-
Culet None
Fluorescence Negligible
Certificate EGL
Price $2 719.00

What to do?

Putting aside the issue of the EGL cert (already discussed in another post),
the price is almost the same. The only apparent difference is
Option 1: smaller, better color (G instead of H), but worse clarity VS2 vs. VS1.

Now is all I care if for the brilliance/sparkle/wow effect (yeah yeah I know this is not a 4 ct stone) it seems to ne that option 2 is a much better deal. I get a bigger diamond for comparable clarity and color.
There are also differences in the table/depth %s. But I am not good enough to tell what is better.

Help anyone? Cast your vote! Thank you. Andres

Andre....I'd still drop down a bit on clarity - the best values can be found in SI stones, and in the size range you're talking about, most SI stones are eyeclean. All you need to do to confirm that is talk to the vendor.

Making this alteration would allow you to bump a bit more in the size. Size isn't the be-all, end-all, but it's a significant part of the stone, and it's pointless to sacrifice it by "overbuying" on clarity. Just my 2 cts.

Aljdewey,
Is it true that Whiteflash gives discounts to PS members? I thought I saw that mentioned somewhere before. Thanks.

Hi Girl! I just read your post and searched some info. for you.
I found really good choices from dirtcheapdiamonds.com
here are the numbers, check it out- it's a big purchase:

#1937909, 1.10, D color, SI2, EGL, $3112.

#1773119, 1.05, E color, SI2, EGL, $3152

#1778228, .91, D color, SI2, EGL, $2889.

I personally think you can get a better price and color.
If you don't want to look any further I'd go with the larger looking one, the G. You have 7 days to check out the color, right? Trust me you don't want any yellow. After owning an H-I stone w/ flour., my next diamond must not have any yellow. I don't care if a G faces up White - what about the sides? I don't want to see any yellow! Yuck!
Go for the best color you can!!! Don't get sucked into all that heart and arrows crap either. You'll find a beautiful regular cut.
Let me know how it works out! Good Luck! WHITE IS ALWAYS BETTER! BIGGER IS ALWAYS BETTER! AND A SPARKLE THAT U SEE IN ANY LIGHTING!

White Flash gives a 5% discount to folks from Price Scope. If you call them, be sure to mention PS when you chat with them.

That .81, H, SI1 is a very nice find! Great HCA score with all 4 parameters EX! Great looking specs on paper! Most probably a dazzler. The ultimate test is your eye. Does the diamond appeal to you. Call to you. Speak to you. That's the final exam of any diamond.

As to White Diamonds' comment on G and lower being "yuck yellow",.... Each person has their own personal threshold of color perception and sensitivity. Evidently D/E/F are what White Diamonds prefers and that's great for WD. I have a 3/4, H, SI1 and .43/.44 ct. F, VS2 diamond studs. All 3 are ACA's from White Flash. I've compared them through the sides and there is a difference. Albeit subtle. The H has some body, but not "yuck yellow" by any stretch of the imagination. The F's are very clear. Also keep in mind, the H is nearly twice the size too.

Well made diamonds face up whiter than their actual color grade. And, mounted diamonds appear whiter than the actual color when graded loose. The H you found will be beautifully white set in yellow gold, white gold, or platinum. Will it be white enough for you?? Only you can answer that.

hello aljdewey, thanks for the input. Yes, I was originally considering the 2 stones from whiteflash. However, I am also looking at the diamondideal stone, which also looks excellent. I hope to talk to Whiteflash on friday so that they can tell me whether the data from the EGL certificated has been verified. I also need the pavilion and crown angles, so that I can get the HCA score, etc. The price of the diamondideal stone is comparable and has an AGS certification. The cut is excellent, but the color and clarity are below the whiteflash stones (although they may be comparable given the EGL cert). So as you can see, I need to wait and get as much info as possible. Cheers, Andres.

if the EGL certs are from the USA, then they are probably in range. in general, EGL USA certs for diamonds over 1.5 carats and over are right on the money. in this case, go for higher color over clarity. i have seen many AGS 0 ideal cust look dull since there grading system is flawed IMO.

Color is in the eye of the beholder, but I have both G stones (e-ring and earrings) and an H stone (Regent pendant) and they look the darn same to me! My H colored Regent is so blazingly white, honestly I don't know how anyone could call a H&A 'H' stone 'yellow' from any angle. Sure when compared side by side to D it's going to show a tint but yellow? I hardly think so. As for buying into 'Hearts and Arrows crap', everything is a personal choice. I have seen some amazingly priced H&A stones online whereas in a B&M an 'ideal' stone is priced more and the numbers don't even add up. You can't blanket statement anything when it comes to diamonds.

WhiteFlash discounts for Pscope customers, but also I have noticed that they are willing to work with people regarding their budgets as best as possible, so I would not rule them out if you find a stone that is a little over budget, you never know.

I would second the comments about dropping clarity...and keeping color. I would hands down choose a G or H stone and go more for an SI1 clarity (making sure it's eye clean) in order to get the biggest bang for your buck.

Good luck!
