Hello again

I am new to this sight, but I have been hanging around and reading posts for about a month. I have found it very enlightening and educational. I have learned more about diamonds (especially cut) here than I could have hoped for in such a short amount of time.

I was wondering if I could get some input on what some of you think of a stone that scores 2.6 on the HCA. It is a nearly colorless, SI2 (eyeclean). I don't want to put too much info on here because my girlfriend (soon to be fiance') hangs out here almost as much as I do, and I don't want to tip her off.

The stone looks great to me, but I have not seen it outside the jewelry store. I found it at a B&M, and it cost about 10% more than similar stones are going for at Whiteflash and other online dealers. I put the Sarin info into the HCA and got 2.6. Thanks!!

Also, shouldn't a Sarin report give the the pavilion angle? I got the pavilion %, but not the angle, so the HCA may be a little off. Here's what I got from the Sarin:

Dimensions 7.53-7.58x4.69 (GIA cert. 7.50-7.53X4.69)
Table 56% (GIA cert. = 55%)
Total Depth 62% (GIA cert. = 62.4%)
Crown Angle 34
Crown Height 14.9%
Pavilion Depth 43.7%
Girdle thin to slightly thick (faceted)
No Culet

As you can see some of the GIA stats differ with the Sarin stats. What's up with that? Is either more reliable or accurate?

I appreciate any input. Thanks.

BlackIce, Slight diffence in Sarin and GIA numbers are quite common and caused by measurement errors of each particular machine. Besides, there are different models of Sarin with different accuracy, e.g. DiaMension is more accurate than BrilliantEye.

HCA 2.6 is a very good score actually. Price difference for B&M sounds reasonable. You might want to check it with independent appraiser.

Thanks, Leonid.

What about the pavilion angle? Shouldn''t the Sarin report include that along with all the other information? How accurate is the HCA with the pavilion depth as opposed to the pavilion angle?
Slight variations of pavilion angle seem to make a significant difference on the HCA.

You didn't post the pavilion angle... Garry suggests using pavilion angle if possible because Sarin measures it more accurately than depth %. (The last one depends on accuracy of girdle measurements also).

Try to use pavilion angle if available.

I will get the complete Sarin report tomorrow. These are the numbers the vendor gave me over the phone. Wonder why he didn''t give me the pavilion angle? Hmmmm.

Make sure the angles are not rounded. Is it exactly 34.0 deg? Ask about the Sarin model.

What is the carat size? Symmetry, Polish?

She said yes!!! We went to Chateau Elan and everything went perfectly. I am attaching a picture of the ring. She loves it, by the way, and I had it appraised by a local appraiser listed on PS. I think it appraised pretty well for a B&M stone. Anyway, here's the picture.

I am anxious to here your valued opinions.

Oops. Sorry. I will try to make this file smaller.

Thanks for your compliments. Hanging out at Pricescope helped alot. I drove the sales staff crazy, but in the end, they were very helpful and bent over backwards to get me what I wanted.

Here''s a better perspective on that last one.

Also, I did a lot of work and figured the pavilion angle to be between 41.0 (1.5 HCA) and 41.1(2.2 HCA), so the HCA score is even better than 2.6. Regardless, it is a beatiful stone (if I do say so myself), and my fiancee is getting major compliments from everyone. She''s very happy, and that''s what it''s all about.

looks nice, big and sparkly, three great diamond traits...

i love how it looks so blue in all the pictures and i think i see a hint of arrows in that last one.

congrats!

Thanks. Compliments from you ladies and gentlemen are nothing to sneeze at. Yes, Mara, in the right lighting and at the right angles, arrows are visible. Alas, they are not perfect, so this stone is not H&A. I wasn''t particularly shopping for an H&A, though, so anything close is just a bonus, and it really is a beautiful effect when the point of an arrow gleams up at you. Thanks again for your kind words.
