Thanks for all the input! I guess I was putting to much faith in the report and HCA results. I know that Tiffany sells diamonds down to I color, and VS clarity... and I have never seen anything there that was less than stellar to my amature eye. Thought I could save a buck by ditching the blue box... posting the GIA report pics....

you can save a lot of bucks by ditching the blue box and i hope you dont pay a 30% premium out of fustration. If you buy a vetted stone from Whiteflash or GOG for example you will be thrilled and will probably have a superior stone to a Tiffany stone. Blue Nile is kind of the medium grade stuff--not bad just not the best. their stones are all certed --mostly GIA but they are not the top cut grades. I bought a significant size stone from Whiteflash that I could never have afforded if I bought from a Harry Winston etc

I would guess cloud issues but without seeing it cant say for sure.

Can you snap a picture of the diamond with the table parallel to the lens in fluorescent lighting?
 
it also looks like there is an extra facet on the plot?
 
I will take a look at whiteflash, I didn''t come across it in my web search for online diamond dealers. I am definately going to return it, but was wondering if it was a fluke or if I run a high risk of getting another less than impressive diamond if I got another one from the Nile. You want a pic from the side of the diamond or from directly above it?
 
Hmmm... good call on the extra facet, I have looked at this report several times and never really noticed it! What is GOG?

havent you checked out all the pricescope recommended vendors?:

whiteflash--they have a proprietary cut called "A Cut Above" that is I believe AGS 0

GO UP TO THE TOP RIGHT OF THIS PAGE AND LOOK UNDER RESOURCES --"DIAMOND VENDORS"--BLUE NILE IS THERE TOO ITS PAID ADVERTISING I BELIEVE BUT IF YOU POST A QUESTION ON WHERE TO BUY A ROUND TOP STONE YOU WILL INVARIABLY HEAR THE SAME FEW NAMES
 
Just an FYI, but any HCA score under 2 is equal... so a score of 1.9 and a score of .7 would be considered equally worthy of consideration. (The whole "it''s a tool for weeding out duds, not selecting" thing.)

Though it does look a little funky in the pictures, it could possibly be just the fact that ideal cut diamonds can go a bit dark in some lighting situations. Like, direct sunlight in particular. Could be that the Leo was a little leakier and thus looked brighter white in super-direct light; I know Strmrdr has explained why this happens, but I can''t recall the *why* of it.

However, it does look a bit dark in the photos, so it seems like it could be another factor. The fact that it''s an SI2 with clouds makes me wonder if that''s the real issue, not the cut.

Nevertheless I''d avoid the Leo option- you can do much better, even though this other diamond doesn''t look like the perfect choice probably. You have a very healthy budget; I''d go with a hand picked performer like an Whiteflash''s A Cut Above or a Good Old Gold stone. Those have been cherry picked by an experienced vendor to be the cream of the crop, if you''ll pardon the very weirdly mixed metaphor there.

Well, I was already shopping blue nile by the time I ended up on this site looking up the importance of girdle thickness, table size, etc. I didn''t even look at the other links on the site aside from the education/tutorials.

Thanks Poppy, I was using the HCA as a tool after I selected 5 or so finalists, it scored the best so I went with it. I don''t know all the science behind the diamond cuts, but this stone looks awesome from certain angles and in certain lighting, but I am not a fan of "upgrades" so this will be the one and only engagement stone- so I want it to be the best. I thought about just spending more $$ but the color and clarity of the Leo were the same and it was a pretty impressive looking stone - so I went for it. I will have to reconsider the vendor...
