Hi there,
I am rather new to the field of diamond hunting, but have been browsing casually for some time. I felt that I had done my homework and was hoping to pop the question on Thanksgiving... but now my search for the perfect diamond is giving me an ulcer! She loves just about everything at Tiffany & Co (particularly the Novo & Legacy), but I am not so keen on their prices. I bought a "Leo" diamond at a mall jeweler (1.96 Round Brilliant, I color, Si2 solitare in a simple 4-prong white-gold setting... but felt that I could find a "comprable" diamond online for a better price. So I ordered this GIA certified 2.01 Round Brilliant; Excellent Cut; I color; Si2; Excellent polish & symmetry; no flourescence; Culet - none. I entered the specs into the HCA and it scored a 0.7 Excellent. This stone was cheaper so I had it set in platinum with sidestones and still saved $. I was very proud of myself... until, as requested by the salesperson at the mall, I took my new prize to the store for a side-by-side "Pepsi-challenge" style comparison with the same Leo that I had returned a week earlier. My ring sparkles & looks great, but when you look down at the stone, it has a "grayish" haze when compared to the "whiter" Leo. The salesperson said that it was due to the cut... I did not argue, but I am confused because the GIA report states an excellent cut, it scored better than any other diamond that I entered into the HCA, and the specs for color and clarity grade are identical (a subjective grading, I know). Now I am trying to decide if I should order another diamond from the site upgrading the cut from the "Ideal" (which I purchased) to the "Signature-Ideal", or go back and get the Leo, or just bite the bullet and get something I know she would love from Tiffany & Co. I have already scratched the Thanksgiving plans. Does anyone know what may be the cause of the "darkness" of the stone or have any thoughts? Tried to post a pic. Sorry the photos aren''t spectacular. Thanks!

COuld be a floresence difference or the type of inclusions in the stone causing light to not reflect properly. You will get alot of good advice here so take it all in and take your time with the purchase. It will turn out great in the end!!! If you give a budget, people will be able to send you links of other diamonds

Table %, Crown and pavilion angles please.

It''s possible this principle will pertain, but I''ll defer to other more expert to say.

Ostensibly, if you spend $25 and get an idealscope...and go ahead and get the light box with it...that helps to neutralize the various lighting your diamond(s) will be exposed to...

may be ask where you bought your stone? did it come with an actual GIA certificate?

Thanks for the quick reply... I did read that having some flourescence would improve the appearance of diamonds with lesser color grade ratings, but found that many of the diamonds with the specs I was seeking had none, I didn''t think it would be that big of a difference. The Leo did not come with a complete certification card unless I ordered it from the IGI. Culet & Floro was absent- as were the specs needed to enter it into the HCA.
I am working with a liquid budget- the Leo was 18.5K after sales tax (which I avoided online), the diamond in my current ring was 14.7K loose, the setting was 1.9K. For now, my max budget is 25K.

i hate to say this and pictures can be deceivng but it doesnt look too good based on the photos--gray, dark and cloudy

IGI certifcation is a joke ---(GIA, AGS, EGL with caveat emptor and some HRD. with $25,000 you can get something amazing--where did you get your stone?

Sure,
I got it at Bluenile.
It came with a laminated full page GIA report.
The table is 57%; Depth is 60.8%; Crown Angle is 33%; and Pavilion angle is 41%.

percent or degrees?
Also what is the lower girdle %?

The pics are fairly true to form, in low light settings its fire is brilliant, but under better lighting conditions... it does appear grayish. I thought it looked dark when I first saw it, but it was obvious when I put it next to their Leo, and even their cheaper cert. diamond solitares.

sorry, the angles are degrees... I got trigger happy with the "%" button! oops

also are there any comments on the report in the comments section?

i believe the crown and pavilion angles are significantly out of ideal but i cant recall the exact numbers--

Umm... where do I find the lower girdle % on the GIA?

lower part of the diamond diagram its one of 70 75 80 or 85

Under comments, it says "additional clouds are not shown". I saw that on the report before I bought it, but in the education section on reports it said that it was not unusual.

Are there any other inclusions listed other than clouds?
Do you have a image of the report you can post?

well the clouds shouldnt make a difference-that is not uncommon. the I color could be giving it a grayish appearance under fluorescent lighting.

Its not the base angles while they are a little off the PS usual they are good.
AGS0 to AGS1 potential.
The darkness is something else.

I guess that isnt really an angle... but it is 75% all the same- sorry I am not more help!

I meant to save the PDF file of the report... I will take a photo of it and post in a few minutes, want the whole thing or is there a particular area of interest?

I color would be the reverse more body color visible under lower light with good light the body color is masked.
The opposite is being reported.

My guess would be the clouds are the issue.
I would return it for another.

As large as possible the inclusion plot for the diamond and the diagram in separate images.

Tiffany sells I color diamonds and a well cut I color diamond should be lovely if the stone is well cut. i would stick with Si1 or vs 2. personally i hate clouds and feathers. crystals, needles, pinpoints etc are fine

these are all ACA from Whiteflash--you could get the largest and putit in something simple for your total budget
